Unless you’ve been living under a very large rock you probably already know that Rehman has bagged two Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Song “Jai Ho” from the movie Slumdog Millionaire. Apart from the obvious pride and a certain sense of “well its about time innit?” I also can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy for people like A.R. Rehman who may be legends in their own right in Bollywood but still unassumingly walked the red carpet to beat all red carpet’s in Hollywood on Monday and had the last (shy) laugh.

I mean take Anil Kapoor for that matter, after valiantly trying to say the word “Millionaire” a dozen times with a combination of greed and grit that came out slightly slurry in Slumdog Millionaire he’s now gushing and googly-eyed over all of Hollywood’s heroes who are suddenly at arms length and for the first time the drama, the tears, the pinch-me-I-must-be-dreaming feeling and even Rehman’s sweet stab at humor “mere paas ma hain” all seem perfectly realistic!

The three main characters of this rags-to-riches story are played by nine actors, showing them in three stages of their lives including British-Indian Dev Patel, 18, and Freida Pinto, 24, labeled a new style icon by Vogue magazine and their younger co-stars, Rubina Ali Qureshi, 9, and Azhar Mohammed Ismail, 10.

When you think of these kids (who give us a reality check when we think we’re “slumming it”) on a trip of a lifetime;  their first ride on an airplane plus a ticket to the Academy Awards (oh and Disney World to top it off) and there’s just no denying the existence of Orphan Annie’s happy ending or Tinkerbell’s fairy dust which makes just about anything possible. Just like it happens in the movies.
