According to Dr. Dre, “With Beats, people are going to hear what the  artists hear, and listen to the music the way they should: the way I  do.”

HP organized a ‘Meet’ at Bonobo on Saturday afternoon for audiophiles and the press to check out their Beats™ technology. I got invited as a ‘music enthusiast’ and since Papal from Pentagram was talking about it, I thought I’d go by and check it out.

Beats™ is actually audio technology by Dr. Dre and HP has tied up with him to put the technology into some of their laptops. While it’s true that most computer manufacturers do focus more on video, it’s great that HP is thinking about audio quality as well.

Papal from Pentagram and Aditya Sharma from HP talked about the technology and the laptops, and then let us put them to the test.

Testing the Dr Dre headphones
Testing the Dr Dre headphones

My verdict – yes Beats™ does make a difference. However, it’s most effective if you also get the incredible Dr Dre headphones with it. I tried it first with the headphones and the difference is quite audible – it opens up the sound, seems to give it more space so you can hear the nuances more, has a stronger bass, and I think also pumps up the volume just a tad. With regular headphones you notice the difference in the sound a lot less. So, if you’re going to invest in an HP laptop with Beats™, make sure you get the Dr. Dre headphones as well!

The Dr. Dre headphones are superb on their own as well, and look fantastic too. Very #geekchic.

Here’s Pentagram talking about HP Beats. Pentagram is one of my all time favourite bands (if you’ve been to a gig, you’ll know what I’m talking about). HP helped Pentagram to get to Music Matters (which is a music conference) in Singapore last month, where they played three superb gigs.
