Many years ago, Delhi-based designer Ritu Beri made India proud by being appointed Head Designer to the French couture House, Jean Louis Scherrer. And while that association didn’t last long, India now has another reason to celebrate as another Delhi-based designer, Manish Arora, premieres his collection for the legendary Paco Rabanne, at the ongoing Paris Fashion Week.

Having started off his career by designing jewelry for established labels like Dior, Balenciaga and Givenchy, the half French and half Spanish Paco Rabanne founded his own fashion House in the mid Sixties. He went on to become the “Enfant Terrible” of Paris fashion and created signature looks in the form of metallic and chain-mail dresses.

Last year, Manish Arora was appointed as the creative director of the floundering company and his recent preview of the Spring 2012 collection has garnered fantastic reviews from the fashion press.

Mixing wearability with the avant-garde,  Manish has delved into the Paco Rabanne archives and come out with updated versions of the metallic dresses and the space-age look. Flying-saucer hats, exaggerated hips and huge permanent pleats are just a few of the key elements in this collection.

Let’s hope Manish’s appointment will put India in the spotlight on the fashion map and hopefully, he’ll go on to create path-breaking collections season after season!
