OH, it keeps getting better by the day! Day 3 of Cannes had the red carpet premiere of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, the screening of the newly restored 4.5 hour long 1984 epic Once Upon a Time in America by Gucci and The Film Foundation, the Giorgio Armani-hosted Haiti Carnival Benefit, and of course, many a photocalls during the day. All this only means one thing to us: it was yet another epic fashion parade! SO, here’s our commentary… 😉

Paz Vega (a popular Spanish actress) in that black-and-white number at the red carpet of Madagascar 3… I’m speechless. Where Eva Longoria’s Marchesa gown in the opening night failed, this Stéphane Rolland Spring 2012 Couture gown, triumphed! Why? Because of a manageable train-length; the frou-frou/feathered details didn’t seem overwhelming and forced at all, it just created drama without trying hard. The keyhole bodice was another cerebral aspect of the gown, as it gave an architectural spin on cleavage. Not least, the addition of the gold-accented waistband, which broke down the monotony of black-and-white. That’s how you do haute couture! Chopard earrings and L’Oréal slap completed her look. Easily my pick for the best dressed of the day!

Freida Pinto. Wowed. For the umpteenth time, that is. The striped ensemble of a cropped halter top and matching belted skirt from Salvatore Ferragamo’s Resort 2012 collection was not only bang on trend (yep, baring the midriff is “in” again :-@), but also perfect for a daytime photocall with the azure French Riviera as the backdrop. Ah, picture perfect, in all sense.

Freida’s daytime wear becomes all the more impressive if you look at Jada Pinkett-Smith’s, for the photocall of her film Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted. She bloomin’ brought out a gown, a Alberta Ferretti S/S’12 one, for just a casual, daytime, photo exercise. If the emerald chiffon gown was worn as presented on the runway ‒ i.e. a few inches shorter, with flat, preferably gold/silver, sandals and sans the gold cuff ‒ it would have made for a delicate, feminine and breezy day look. She now looks overdressed 🙁

Grudgingly saying it, but Atelier Versace Spring 2012 does have some show-stopping gowns. We saw one on Freida in Day 2, and here’s another one on Jada, at the red carpet premiere of the film. The fully-embellished orange gown with a thigh-high split looked proper fierce on Jada, no? I liked that she went for gold footwear ‒ Jimmy Choo ‘Suki’ sandals they are ‒ as it catches the best feature of that gown, the crescent-shaped gold metal lining the bodice.

Like Versace, I’ve a strong aversion towards all things Cavalli, which might be why that red sequined long-sleeved custom Roberto Cavalli gown looked like a Quality Street wrapper to me. The

blinding

gleaming gown was good enough to be sent out on its own; the ruby Chopard jewels, although splendid, was a bit overkill in this instance. But full marks to Jane Fonda, she really owned that look at the red carpet of Madagascar 3.

Another spot of overaccessorizing was done by Naomi Watts at the premiere of Madagascar: 3. Her nude feather-embroidered illusion dress with cascade skirt from Marchesa’s A/W’12 gown deserved to be focal point of her look, instead it had to compete for attention with that eye-catching Chopard white diamond collar necklace. The earrings and the silver-embellished clutch would have been just right.

But Jessica Chastain could do with all the accessorizing that Naomi did! Her white flowing Armani Privé gown, with sweetheart neckline and beaded details on the bodice, was a little bridal-esque for a red carpet as grand as the Cannes’. A necklace along with her Chopard earrings and a silver/gold clutch would have salvaged this look. And oh, she had Jimmy Choo ‘Greta’ platform sandals on.

Inès de la Fressange’s pink robe dress was just amaze. I’m in love with that shade of pink, Schiaparelli pink as it’s known by. She paired it gold flat sandals (Jada could’ve nicked them for her photocall!), a gold weave clutch and some interesting jewellery from Boucheron, all of which delightfully completed her look.

She wore the ‘Pompon’ bracelet in yellow gold set with diamonds from the maison‘s archives dating back to 1946,  along with a tassle necklace in yellow gold set with diamonds dating from 1956 which she wrist nonchalantly wrapped around her wrist. This woman’s just so effortlessly stylish. French lasses, French lasses… *sigh*

Okay, something for the guys now… I present to you… Ewan McGregor! He’s become quite the confident dresser this Cannes ‒ I like. Yep, the fitting of the suit’s perfect, the trouser length’s a little short to shed attention to… HIS SHOES! Two-tone brogues they are. Quirky, fun ‒ and full of swagger. Do give them a thought… 😉

P.S. The Gucci screening deserves another post of its own ‒ coming right up 🙂
