The Olympics is a sporting event yes, we’ve established that but that doesn’t mean that sportsmen and women can’t wear some nice designer duds right? Some of the best designer labels have decided to outfit their fellow countrymen. Let’s take a look at those who have.

United States of America

The King of Preppy and Nautical fashion, Ralph Lauren has designed the official opening ceremony outfits for his home country. Chic tailored blazers, the trademark use of his polo logo feature on the costume.

Italy

Italy has a rich pool of designers, it’s no wonder then that they have two fashion heavyweights designing for them – Prada and Giorgio Armani. Prada has designed the Italian Sailing team’s costumes whereas Armani has done the rest. I personally think the Prada design trumps Armanis!

Great Britain

Stella McCartney for Great Britain

Who better to advocate Great Britain and fashion than Stella McCartney herself. Her designs are my second favourite (the first being  Ralph Lauren) Her association with sports brand Adidas was key in bagging the esteemed role. I love how she gave the Union Jack a contemporary twist by turning it blue. Brilliance.

France

Hermès is known for it’s rich design heritage, in fact it started out as company that produced saddles and parts for carriages. So it made perfect sense to outfit the French equestrian team. The outfit comprises of the French flag colours, red white and blue. Stark yet simple.

As for India, there weren’t any designers creating their outfits 🙁 but I wish someone like a Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna or Rajesh Pratap Singh had got the chance to design.

Which one is your favourite?
