Hair is something so personal to us women. A bad haircut leads us to weep buckets over our shorn locks (sadly I know from experience). But reminiscing about all my bad cuts also got me thinking about those hairstyles that became crazes. We’ve all, on occasion, torn a picture out from a magazine and thrust it into the face of our hairstylist (can only imagine how much they love that). Check out our list of the most iconic hairstyles!

1) Jennifer Aniston “The Rachel”

A then relatively unknown actress on an upcoming show called Friends. As the show became popular, Jennifer Aniston became a household name, partly thanks to her shaggy haircut. It was THE ’90s haircut. Surprisingly, she admitted to hating it.

2) Veronica Lake

This 1940’s screen siren was famous for her loose finger curls. In fact, the character Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, was modeled after Lake’s infamous hairstyle.

3) Mia Farrow ‘Rosemary’s Baby’

Blessed with a head full of thick long hair, Mia Farrow surprised everyone when she went for a pixie cut for her movie Rosemary’s Baby . Well, the script demanded it. Cut by famed hairstylist Vidal Sassoon, Farrow must have known she was in safe hands.

4) Louise Brooks

The original 1920s flapper girl, and the first person to sport the hairstyle we now know as “The Bob.” Her short haircut has been spotted on the likes of Katie Holmes, Selma Blair and Agyness Deyn.

5) Victoria Beckham

It was Victoria Beckham, not Rihanna, who brought back a modernized version of the “Bob.” The sleek hairstyle got women of all ages to cut their precious mane for a shorter do.

6) Blake Lively

The youngest entrant on this list, Blake Lively has been the dubbed the new hair queen, drawing comparisons to Jennifer Aniston. Her bed head hair has made us put down those hair straighteners and curling irons for a more natural look.

7) Farrah Fawcett

This picture got millions of boys’ pulses racing in the 1970’s. Charlie’s Angels star Farrah Fawcett became a sex symbol owing to her feathered bangs. EVERYONE started copying this style at the time. This is probably one of my favourite looks of all time.

8) Brigitte Bardot

The original sex kitten, French actress Brigitte Bardot was the first to rock the bouffant. The updo is a go-to hairstyle for the red carpet.

9) Sadhana “Fringe”

The only Indian on this list, 1960’s actress Sadhana Shivdasani was known for her trademark fringe. Legions of Indian women soon followed suit copying those wispy bangs.

10) Princess Diana

Princess Diana was one of the first royals that had a definitive style. Her name was stamped firmly on the best-dressed lists, but it was also her hair that got everyone talking. Always short and textured, it provided much relief to the ladies who were OD-ing on hairspray during that time.
