I’m here, I’m here, alive and breathing – after sifting through the gazillion pics that MissMalini’s photographers sent from Big B’s big 7-0 bash. Trust it’s the great reverence that Amitabh Bachchan enjoys, because 99.99% of the attendees, many of whom habitually turn up at events inappropriately dressed, made the effort. Few passed with flying colours, some got grace marks, while the rest… ! You’ve seen how the ladies dazzled, now let’s have a look at how the menfolk did, shall we?
Where else would the father-and-son duo be other than at the very top of the sartorial foodchain?!! The shawl collar tux (which is 007’s preference, FYI), and the cummerbund… oh-so-dashing!
I do have a gripe though – mind, it’s a teeny weeny one – and it’s to do with the wing-tip collar and pre-tied bow… only ‘cos… iamabowtiesnob. Still, Sr. Khanna’s looking well, well spiffy here. As for his son, can’t be arsed to elaborate. By now we’ve come to expect nothing less than sartorial masterclass from him…
… Rahul Bose, every time they step out!! Extra marks here for the waistcoat and keeping the top button of the suit jacket fastened.
Anil Kapoor. Just check out his 1.5-breasted suit… this man has some serious swag! Just a few more appearances like this, this and this, and I’ll elevate him to ‘style God’ status like the two Rahuls 😉
You can tell right away if a man has flair for style if he can get the right balance between the jacket-shirt-tie-pocket square – as it’s a tricky affair. The pocket square should not match with anything, yet it has to contrast harmoniously with the rest. Most men struggle with this, but Dilip Kumar managed it just fine. I love how the maroon of his pocket square – which, btw, was nicely done up in a puff − plays off the faint stripes of deep red on his repp tie.
This guy with Fardeen Khan (anyone know who he is?) caught my attention for that same reason. I’m totally loving his black textured tie and grey patterned pocket square combo.
Fardeen Khan got it right too, but I was kinda put off by his insistence to be matchy-matchy: he matched his tie to the piping of his gorgeous velvet jacket, FFS!!
You can never go wrong by getting the basics right and keeping things clean and simple. Like Arshard Warsi, DJ Aqeel Ali, Sharman Joshi, Ehsaan Noorani, John Abraham, Farhan Azmi (Ayesha Takia‘s husband) and Rishi Kapoor, did. And by that I’m mostly referring to getting the fit of your suit right and sticking to black-and-white (or grey!).
Javed Akhtar and Jai Mehta (Juhi Chawla’s husband), looked so elegant, and dignified, in traditional Indian wear, which, fit, them, just right! Wish more men would dress up like that… *sigh*
