Even though she began her film career at the tender age of twelve-years-old and was known as Baby Bhanurekha, it wasn’t until 1969 (three years later) that Rekha debuted as a heroine in the Kannada film, Goa Dalli CID 999.

The early years of her journey into filmdom saw Rekha as very un-glamorous and a Plain Jane. She wore her hair without discernible style and make-up without much flamboyance.

Today, of course, she’s known to be among Bollywood’s top glamour queens.

Take a look at Rekha the Plain Jane metamorphose into Rekha the Glamazon over her forty-five year acting career:

Sometime in the late Eighties, around the time she played a powerful role in Khoon Bhari Maang as a fashion model, Rekha began to get more stylish and experimented (not always successfully) with her look.

Lots of bling jewelry, outre make-up and clothes representing the excesses of the Eighties were her sartorial choices. Take a look…

However, with age creeping up on her, Rekha has switched to a more demure look in exquisite Kancheevaram sarees – at least, when she steps out in public. Even though the sarees may be of bright hues and Rekha is bedecked in gold temple jewelry, the signature gajra in her hair and sindoor on her forehead are her modern-day trademarks.

Whew! That’s quite a transition for Rekha – from Plain Jane to Kancheevaram Queen – even if it is over a forty year period.

Nevertheless, here’s wishing Rekha a very happy birthday from Team MissMalini.
