Over the weekend, I dragged along friends and hit the beach with Nupur Shikhare for a ‘Fitnessism’ bootcamp. Not only did I have a blast, but put my physical fitness to the test. My legs are still sore as I am typing this!

Here’s the scoop on why you should try a weekend beach bootcamp too!

1.The Venue

Personally, I find gyms suck the life out of me. There is nothing about their funky smell and men checking themselves out in the mirror while doing biceps curls, that appeals to me. I loved that Nupur has taken a different route and venue to being fit and working out. Sunshine and the sound of waves makes two hours fly by!

2. Circuit Training

Circuit training is a great boredom buster. Moving quickly from one excercise to the next means your mind doesn’t have time to wander or tune out. Studies also show that it burns more calories than resting between workouts. Score!

Most of the circuits during weekend included exercises that bootcampers could easily replicate at home such as squats, walking lunges, crawls, pushups and the dreaded burpee. Now I just need to find a way to motivate myself to do these every weekend.

3. Body Balance

The Fitnessism Team is huge on body balance as it is one of the most important aspects of being fit which most of us completely ignore. Body balance exercises build flexibility and strength and always leave me feeling centered and calm. Having optimal balance in equilibrium also minimizes the risk of falls and injuries, which is very important when trying poses such as handstands and backbends.

4. Partner Workouts

I’d rather lift a friend than a weight any day. I should probably start by admitting I was a pathetic partner on day one of bootcamp and may have dropped my workout buddy while he was attempting a handstand. Luckily I redeemed myself on day two when I partnered with my friend Afsha for shoulder presses, stretches and a variety of pushups.
