Wills India Fashion Week can get pretty hectic. A trade fair where the who’s who in fashion are out with sharpened claws. But MissMalini and I knew, the key to survival lies in balance between elements used and simplicity. As MissMalini’s stylist, here’s what I was thinking while charting her looks.

Day 1: Lady-like MadMen

If there’s one thing you can’t take away from MissMalini, it’s her winning smile. Keeping that charm in my styling process, this Satya Paul dress by Masaba offered a befitting classic look. The Mad Men 50’s silhouette and the ink drop print from the label’s A/W ’14 collection was perfect to kick start fashion week.

Day 2: Take on Whimsicality

We had seen this Bebe dress a few days before fashion week, and couldn’t wait to try it out for an event. The jewel toned dress had a lot of chiffon and slit sleeves that immediately reminded me of Florence and The Machine‘s Florence Welch. I reached for a look based on Florence’s fairy tale inspired, romantic sense of style. So, for Day 2, MissMalini’s look was a whimsical page from the stylings of Florence Welch.

Day 3: Sporty Pop

MissMalini and some of fashion’s sexiest stars were presented with their own pair of new kicks by Adidas Originals’ Jeremy Scott. Malini’s choice was an ankle sneaker with wedges and wings. In order to balance the strong statement design of the shoes, I decided to keep the look basic in a white tank and pair of blue jeans. But just at the last minute, I sensed we needed a strong pop of colour. I had been wanting to use a yellow Sanchita jacket on Malini from her wardrobe and decided to play off a fashioned sporty look.

Day 4: Japanese sensibility

As a stylist, I have a strong love for clean tailoring and hidden construction. Those qualities are quite prominent in Ruchika Sachdeva‘s Bodice. I sat Ruchika down to take me through her collection and finally, we zeroed in on the one dress that we both thought was great for Malini. The look was a mix of the Japanese school girl silhouette but with an informed fashion twist on it.

Day 5: Power suit

My aim, while dressing MissMalini, is constant: aesthetically simple, comfortable to wear with an element of excitement. And through the week, Malini and I managed to play it all well. But for the last look, I had to try something more. Our blogger-in-chief has never done a pant suit silhouette, at least for as long as I can remember. My Inspiration was Tilda Swinton And Drvv’s selection for her was bang on! I built a strong business look around it and worked in a fishtail braid.

But a look is as good as the attention to detail paid. And that was easily achieved with Rod Anker and the Monsoon Salon team working on MissMalini’s hair-dos, one after another with precision, while MAC created one strong make -up look after another. It was a delight playing dress up with MissMalini for all of the 5 days of Will India Fashion Week. And I would love to know, what look did you like the most?
