She’s worn many hats during her illustrious career and is arguably the first woman in India to give the humble noodle-strap (on her saree blouse) a cult status. So it comes as no surprise that the very dynamic Mandira Bedi would dabble in fashion design and launch her own boutique.
Saturday evening in Mumbai saw many of Mandira’s Bollywood buddies arrive in their fashionable best for the opening of her first boutique in Khar. It was inaugurated by Karan Johar.
Says Mandira, “Being on a panel of experts and talking cricket had more perks than I had imagined. It got me to be associated with the most beautiful garment: the sari. The more I wore saris, the more I grew to love them. The sari is the most versatile garment ever. It can be formal, conservative, fun and sexy. And so, to make my relationship with the sari even stronger, one day I walked into a fabric store and bought a few fabrics. I took them to a tailor and I told him what to do. And that’s just how it got going. As the days went by, I really started to enjoy colours and fabrics. My saris are not about heavy work and lots of embroidery. I like to believe they radiate color and drama. They are effective and affordable!”
