Day 2 of India Bridal Fashion Week had two very different designers showcasing their lines. On one side of the tangent was Pallavi Jaikishan, a designer well versed with bridal wear and Gaurav Gupta, considered to be one of India’s most avant-garde designers and not one managed to disappoint.

There’s a certain romance to Pallavi Jaikishan’s designs. The veteran designer showcased her line of bridal wear at the opening show for Day 2 at India Bridal Fashion Week. Split up into three distinct collections of hand-painted saris, lehenga dresses and oxblood shades.

With Sufi music playing in the background and a ramp adorned with a neat row of plants, models walked out wearing saris and lehengas that were paired with statement necklaces and rings. I personally loved the pastel hues that had a very minimal amount of bling.

The piece de resistance was the red embroidered sari that looked every inch the royal bride. Spotted on the front row were Madhoo and socialite Monica Vaziralli.

You know that Gupta’s show will be a cinematic experience and on Saturday he didn’t disappoint. The backdrop was lit with skeins of gold that snaked down the catwalk. Presenting his Lightfall collection, the show opened with a masked model wearing a black sheer gown that left very little to the imagination.

The collection then moved onto evening gowns that had a sensual twist owing to the use of lamé,lurex and jersey fabrics. The colour palette ranged from grey, ecru, gold and Egyptian teal to hints of neons.

Gupta’s forte lies in his sari gowns and he didn’t disappoint. He used traditional techniques like Saadi, Pitta, Zari, Nakshee and 3D surface ornamentation.
The models sported some seriously heavy ear ornamentation – from shoulder dusters to ear cuffs. I love that Gaurav’s vision extends to every small minute detail – the embellished chunky shoes worked well with the outfits.

Cheering him on were his friends and well-wishers such as Kiran Rao, Kajal, Prachi Desai, Kalki Koechlin, Vogue India’s Anaita Shroff Adajania and Che Kurien (Editor of GQ India)
