One of the things I was most excited about on this season of Koffee With Karan is the fact that Karan Johar decided that, instead of bringing only “couples” on the show, he was going to focus on showcasing some friendship. We know that Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, who get along very well, have already shot for an episode, and that’s one that I’m really looking forward to. The other one that I really wanted to see was last night’s episode with Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, and I have to say, it lived up to my expectations.
It was a seriously random, crazy episode, and I laughed through most of it. What I liked best is that it didn’t have any real direction: Karan tried to get a confession out of Ranveer about him dating Deepika, but after a while, whatever notes he must have had probably got thrown out of the window. Those two took it off in another direction entirely, and I don’t think even Karan knew where it was going after a certain point. In case you missed the episode, I’ve jotted down 5 of the things we’ve learned about these two upcoming actors – and their relationship – over the course of their conversation!
1. Arjun and Ranveer have some serious bromance
I love a good bromance, and these two are the definition of it. From their inside jokes to constantly referring to each other as “baba” (at least it wasn’t “bro”?), to the introduction Ranveer gave of Arjun (“Ubharta hua sitaara, meri aakhon ka taara, dulhaara, ishq ka maara”), to the “let’s hug it out” to “you’re my jigar ka tukda” to “dhina dhin dha” to Arjun admitting that they had a conversation to sort out those rumours that began doing the rounds about him and Anushka… yup, it’s safe to say that they’re very close.
2. Arjun and Ranveer’s friendship began thanks to some massy music
The whole start of this bromance was when they would attend parties together and realise that they were the only two who were really enthusiastic about dancing to all those masala songs – you know, the ones from the 80s. Now, Ranveer also has a special playlist on his iPod called just “Raita,” which holds all these fantastic songs.
3. Ranveer is a people pleaser
If you were wondering what’s the reasoning or the motivation behind all of Ranveer’s over the top actions, this is probably a good answer: he’s a people pleaser. That would explain why he always gives the paparazzi something to get happy about when he poses for pictures (I swear he’s like their favourite or something). His general enthusiasm and – there’s no other way to put it – “bounciness” is also a good indication of that quality within him. He said on the show that, “It’s not that I don’t get low or depressed. It’s not that I don’t go into a shell. I do, but I don’t like to put that on display. I guess I’m a people pleaser. There’s some keeda in me that says everybody must smile and laugh. I just want to put a smile on someone’s face. That’s my whole thing.”
4. Arjun bottles in all his feelings
He’s perhaps the opposite of Ranveer in this manner – while Ranveer is exuberant and enthusiastic, Arjun prefers keeping things inside him. “I hold everything in. I just think, think, think and keep thinking. I try to resolve everything in my own head. That’s why I like being an actor and getting to live vicariously through the roles you do.” When asked whether his family situation is one demon that he fights, Arjun agreed. “Of course it is. The complications that your personal life brings because of the baggage that is carried over the years… in terms of my father and his separation.” He said that even though his mom lived in the same joint family with the Kapoors (Boney Kapoor moved out), things still changed – especially people’s perceptions of them. “My mother had a tough time dealing with it on her own, because at the end of the day, family is family.” He even recounted the sad story of his mum’s death, and said that’s perhaps the reason he holds things in: “I deal with things very internally, because of that reason. There’s so much that I have to deal with, that I do it on my own.”
In the end, though, Arjun said it all comes down to whether his father is happy. “I always ask him, do you wake up in the morning happy? And if you are, then it’s fine. We’ll deal with it, whatever happens.”
5. Arjun had a mancrush on Hrithik
I love that he admitted this like it was no big deal! Karan asked Arjun who he would pick – besides Ranveer – for a gay encounter if he had to. Arjun said, “I had a mancrush on Hrithik Roshan after Dhoom 2. You don’t see a film with Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu and come out drooling over Hrithik.” *lol* The second answer after that one was hilarious, too: when asked whether he would pick sex or food, Arjun answered, “Oh, I think I’ve eaten enough for 27 years…”
