How many of us make those countless bucket lists with ‘Travel’ topping the charts? Well, here are a just a few of the amazing places that you must visit at least once in your lifetime!
#1 Venice, Italy
I mean, how could we not include Venice? Anyone that has been here will agree that Venice is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. From its picturesque canals and grandiose basilicas to its colourful homes and cozy wine bars, the city is truly unique, with each building being a work of art! Venice is absolutely breathtaking and makes you feel like you’ve just entered the sets of a real-life fairy tale.
#2 Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon truly has it all: sun, sea and an enchanting atmosphere! Sited on a series of hills running down the grand Tagus River, Lisbon tops my list of one of the world’s most scenic cities. Be ready to be mesmerized at every turn down its colourful, picturesque streets. The city is overlooked by the gargantuan Caste of St. George. Do check out the viewpoints at the top of each hill for the best view of its pastel-colored buildings.
#3 Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is a city that combines both the old and new so effortlessly. With beautiful museums, great food and Gaudi architecture, it is also the perfect beach city where the party never ends! Much of the city is as it was centuries ago, giving it an old-world charm with its narrow streets. You must visit the gothic cathedral and the Basillica of Santa Maria del Mar!
#4 Budapest, Hungary
Split into two by the Danube River, you have the Buda Hills to the west and the Great Plains to the east. Buda, the hill with the royal palace is filled with gothic monuments and neo-renaissance buildings. With its stunning Parliament Building and monumental Chain Bridge, Budapest is surrounded by beautiful landscapes on all sides. Since Budapest is built on numerous hot springs, you must visit the local bathhouses. The countless empires that ruled Budapest in the past have all left a mark on this city!
#5 Prague, Czech Republic
With its eclectic mix of stunning architecture, history and diverse cuisine, Prague is one of the world’s most-visited cities and is a must if you’re searching for the heart and soul of Central Europe! It is known as the city of the thousand spires ecause of it’s beautifully preserved historical monuments. You can be sure of the best view from the bridges that cross the Vltava River or from the Old Town Square. Its winding brick streets and horse-drawn carriages will take you back to your childhood and make you believe in fairytales!
#6 San Francisco, California
This list would be incomplete without San Francisco! It is, without a doubt, the star of the American west coast with its world-renowned cuisine and natural parks. You must take the ferry ride to Alcatraz and explore that hills that surround this city by the bay! San Fran is also one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities within the United States of America. And of course, we can’t forget the Golden Gate Bridge, which looks absolutely magical; but be sure to get breakfast at Mama’s during your stay!
#7 Cape Town, South Africa
You didn’t think we’d forget Cape Town, did you? This marvelous destination is surrounded by the vast seas and pristine beaches on one side, and a visually stunning mountain range on the other! There’s so much to see and do in this vibrant African city, which is by far the most cosmopolitan! Its colonial architecture is still visible today. You can’t visit South Africa and not try their trademark tea! Drink up; it has a ton of health benefits.
#8 Istanbul, Turkey
The city where east meets west. With its monumental mosques and bustling bazaars, Istanbul is the perfect blend of old school and modern architecture, which boasts its 2500 year old history! Istanbul, with its cultural heritage, is a vibrant city which is well known for its amazing coffee and delicious food. Some of the famous landmarks that you must visit are Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, Blue Mosque, Dolmabahçe Palace, Grand Bazaar, and the Spice Bazaar. If you’re someone that likes shisha, be sure to try their shisha bars in their sprawling marketplaces!
#9 Santorini, Greece
You can call me biased here but this had to be on the list! The Greek island of Santorini is extremely famous for its picturesque white and blue homes cascading down to the sea. This is what postcards are made of! Santorini is reputed to have the best sunsets in the world, making it the perfect spot for a post-summer break. This island is also known for its wine, so, be sure to do some wine tasting whilst your stay here. Need I say more? This place is just magical!
#10 Bagan, Myanmar
If Santorini is known to have the best sunsets in the world, this ancient city of Bagan is touted to have the world’s best sunrise. Bagan in central Burma is one of the world’s greatest archeological sites. You’ll get a glimpse of the Buddhist culture with its innumerous temples that were built by the kings of Bagan. Tall men dressed in ankle length “lungis” and women’s faces brushed with yellow “thanaka” paste make the Burmese a visually striking bunch. Not extremely famous a while ago, this city is soon becoming a tourist destination! The best time to visit is between November and February.
