Aaand that’s the sound of heartbreak. After playing for over 1000 uninterrupted weeks, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is now officially out of cinemas. It was the longest running film in Bollywood’s history, but it made its final curtain call at Maratha Mandir today, February 19th.

Here’s why: It seems that after the 1000 weeks celebration, the theatre told Yash Raj Films that they’d like to move DDLJ to the 9:15am slot instead of 11:30am, since it was difficult for them to accommodate multiple releases every week with only 3 regular shows. This happened from February 13th onwards. However, it seems that there was a bunch of logistical issues, and the staff ended up having to work extra long hours to accommodate this new, early morning show. As a result, both Maratha Mandir and YRF have mutually decided to end the record-breaking run of this film.

Kajol says:

1009 weeks is record making and record breaking. It’s a phenomenon that will probably never be repeated. Good enough for me.

The film played for the last time at Maratha Mandir at 9:15am on February 19th. But, of course, it’ll play on in our hearts forever. <3
