Welcome 2 Karachi

In the times when even a semi-decent film is hard to come by and majority of releases are flopping left, right and centre, here comes a film which explores the journey of a couple of Indians who land themselves in Pakistan. Though the film’s promo has sprung a pleasant surprise, it is also the camaraderie between the two actors, coupled with some funny one liners as well as anecdotal humour quotient which has managed to fetch good attention.

We are talking about Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani starrer Welcome 2 Karachi which is directed by Khiladi 786 maker Ashish Mohan. For producer Vashu Bhagnani, this is good news indeed as he along with the team of Welcome 2 Karachi spent quite some effort in ensuring that the promo gave the right buzz and feel en route its release. Still, one wonders whether at the time of kick-starting the film, did he ever feel that this could well fuel India-Pakistan tension in some way? This is what Vishal Bhagnani had to say:

“There is nothing in our film which has to do with India-Pakistan. Humne iss national ya political situation ka koyi faayda nahi uthaaya hai. It is a fun film about how these two youngsters stay with Pakistanis without any rupees, dollars or pounds. It is such a fun film that agar kuch impact hoga dono countries mein toh woh bhale ka hi hoga as we are making people across both sides of the border laugh. Hum yahan desh ka jhana nahi gaadh rahe hai, we are just making people smile.”

Since Welcome 2 Karachi appears to be a whacky comedy in the offering, is it the kind that caters to masses in a big way?

“Today everyone is in stress so I don’t think that any differentiation of mass or class exists. 20 years back this was a phenomenon where a comedy film was considered to be a mass outing. Today, it has to be basically good and all segments of audience come by. As a filmmaker you need to make sure that at least to some extent, people can forget their stress when they watch your film. We have ensured that with Welcome 2 Karachi,” says Bhagnani.

Hope that’s indeed the case.
