Hamari Adhuri Kahani is set for release this weekend and all eyes are on how the Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer turns out to be. Courtesy the fact that Mahesh Bhatt has written the script for a film after 14 long years, one expects this to be a soul stirring affair indeed – especially with director Mohit Suri at the helm of affairs.
While the world is waking up to female centric films today, it is a known fact that Mahesh Bhatt has kept women on the forefront for decades now. So can one safely say that Bollywood is catching up with something that was identified by Mr Bhatt more than three decades with Arth itself? Mahesh Bhatt says,
“Well yes, in all my films women have been at the driving seat. In fact I am surprised when people say that your films objectify women. How can you accuse me for that? In fact why just Arth, even Daddy had such a strong role for Pooja.”
On being prodded further, he was more than happy to take us through quite a few of his women-centric films. Here they are, in his own words:
Aashiqui – Anu Aggarwal‘s character was not a woman who just wanted to get married and find safety in her lover’s arm. She wanted to create safety for herself through her own efforts.
Jism – It was about a woman who would use her body to get to where she wanted to go. And didn’t Bipasha Basu just take all the honours with this one?
Murder – This was the film which launched Mallika Sherawat into stardom. Wasn’t she on the driving seat of her destiny here?
Aashiqui 2 – It was also about this woman who was so powerful. Shraddha Kapoor played this part so well where she was perceived to be weak and vulnerable, but then when she went out and locked horns with the external world, the drama was heightened, wasn’t it?
Khamoshiyan – Sapna Pabbi was wonderful as this enigmatic woman who was remarkably different from the Mallika and Bipasha construct. It was difficult, but she pulled it off!
Hamari Adhuri Kahaani – Well, we are talking about Vidya Balan here. Her performance is going to make you cry. She will show that Vasudha (the character that she plays) is in every other woman. Mark my words, she is destined for all the awards.
