Cheers to Mamagoto!
Cheers to Mamagoto!

If you haven’t been to Mamagoto, now is the time to go! The Delhi transplant recently launched their new Asian Experiments menu, and based on our visit to their Bandra outlet in Mumbai, it’s one that’s paying off deliciously against their promise of “fun asian eating.”

We started the evening with a sampling of cocktails. The ‘Mexican Confusion’ (kaffir lime-infused tequila with lychee) made for a refreshing start, while the shooters were bright and festive in a few different flavors: Mamakaze, Gin On It, and Gonzo. We tried them all, with the Gin On It being our favorite.

Next were the stars of the night: the dumplings. We tried a mix of veg, chicken and prawn (Jungle and Street Style) and couldn’t put them down. The wrappers held up to the fillings, offering a tender, slightly chewy exterior surrounding a burst of flavor inside. They were served with different spicy and tangy sauces, perfect for a Sunday Dim Sum brunch.

The Asian Experiment menu features two new salads: the Healthy Raw Salad and the Slim Sumo Salad. The Raw Salad has a rice vermicelli noodle base, with crunchy carrots, cashews, and crispy wanton skins in a peanut dressing. The Sumo Salad has a Quinoa base with sweet mango, cherry tomatoes and crunchy roast peanuts in a Thai citrus dressing. While we really enjoyed the flavor in the quinoa salad, though we wished for more of the roasted peanuts. If you’re looking for a light, healthy lunch, this is it.

The Osaka Hummus and Pita is another must-try. We were a bit sceptical of wasabi in hummus, but it worked together beautifully. Each creamy bite imparted a subtle sense of heat on the back of the throat, not to mention that unmistakable wasabi flavor. The garnish of miso chicken (or mushrooms) added a nice texture and created a more substantial appetizer.

For the mains we tried the Thai Go Go Curry, Singapore Race Club Curry, and Saigon Bowl in both Veg and Non-Veg. The Thai Go Go curry is a comforting monsoon curry, similar to a massaman. It was nice and spicy, with sweet coconut cream and hearty chicken (or veggies). For a hot summer day, we’d recommend the Saigon bowl. The thin vermicelli noodles and crunchy veggies are mixed in a light scallion oil and soy chilli dip. This dish fills you up without weighing you down. Unfortunately, we didn’t really like the Singapore Race Club Curry. We found it a bit too sticky sweet and hard to eat more than a bite (though we did love the Mantau Buns, which were like little savory doughnuts!)

When it comes to desert, all we can say is Chunky Caramel Sponge Cake! Seriously, you need to eat this cake! This buttery sponge cake with salty caramel and sweet nutty coconut ice cream is absolutely divine. Honestly, we loved all our desserts. We tried Mama’s Homemade Chocolate Cake, Banoffee Pie, Carrot Cake and Crunchy Nutella Mousse, appeasing both chocolate lovers and fruit and nut lovers, alike.

When it comes to good dining experiences, it’s not all just about good food and drinks. Our experience was enhanced by the excellent service and the fun décor. Our water glasses were always full and a smiling waiter was always at hand. Meanwhile the colorful, off beat artwork kept us busy talking.

For a different take on Asian eating, Mamagoto’s Asian Experiment is a great way to spend an evening with friends, discovering flavours at once familiar and new. And remember – whatever you do, save room for that sponge cake.
