The prosecution in the 2002 Salman Khan hit and run case were present before the Bombay High Court some days ago. Public prosecutor Sandee Shinde, informed Justice A.R. Joshi that the key witness, Kamaal Khan is untraceable. Kamaal was required to be examined as a prosecution witness in the Sessions Court. “We could not locate his whereabouts,” the public prosecutor told the bench who is hearing Salman’s appeal against the Sessions Court’s ruling awarding him a five-year jail sentence. IANS has reported that as per the Roznama, Kamaal being a British citizen sought permission to go abroad after appearing in the magistrate’s court. Sandeep added that as soon as Kamaal got the permission to leave the country, he vanished. When the matter was in the Sessions Court, the police and the prosecution could not locate his whereabouts.

The prosecution opened their argument with the statement that it was Salman who was driving the car and not his driver Ashok Singh, who was brought into the picture 13 years after the accident. “He (Ashok Singh) comes after 13 years and deposes. No person can keep a man in employment for 13 years who has brought him a bad name.” Sandeep Shinde argued. Their charge is that Salman was driving the car, his police bodyguard Ravindra Patil — who died in 2007 due to natural causes — was sitting to the left, while Kamaal Khan was in the back seat. The defence has claimed that Ashok Singh was driving the car, Salman was seated to the left while Kamaal Khan was in the back seat. The High Court is currently listening to the appeal put forward by Salman’s defence team, challenging the five year jail term awarded to the actor by the Sessions Court earlier this year.
