Fashion is full of perfectly sensible contradictions and my favourite fashion one is: geek chic. The fashion choices that would have had you shunned by the cool kids in school have never been more stylish. The cute and quirky look has been having a major ‘moment’ for the past few years. So, it came as no surprise when Gucci, a brand known for its luxe, jet-setting aesthetic, sent models down the runway in what could be Austin Power’s dream wardrobe. The retro spectacles, intense prints, high, ruffled necklines, furry librarian loafers and long, pleated skirts were all winners.

Incorporating geek chic elements into your ensemble is a fun way to punch up a fashionable but otherwise boring outfit into something with a little more edge. Here are five fun ways to embrace your inner geek and look good doing it.

Ditch the contacts for a day

One of the best techniques of pulling off geek chic, involves the simple addition of the appropriate glasses. If you already wear glasses, you’re pretty much golden. Thick-rimmed specs are practically synonymous with the geek chic trend. So, instead of complaining about your 10/100 vision, try out a pair of boldly bookish frames.

Wear socks with dresses

Sometimes all it takes is a simple pair of socks to transform your outfit from plain old chic to the geek brand of chic. Try ankle-length socks with ankle boots or sneakers. If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, try an over-the-knee pair with a pleated skirt to achieve that perfect geeky style.

Get Graphic

Graphic tees aren’t just for fanboys and band members any more. You can find adorable, fitted graphic tees almost anywhere. If you regularly watch Game Of Thrones, have memorised every episode of Star Trek, or can quote each chapter of Harry Potter word for word, then find a tee that shows your love and wear it with pride. To add a little class to your geek chic style, layer graphic tees over polo shirts, or pair them with a business casual blazer.

Flaunt that collar

The collared shirt is a staple of any geek chic wardrobe and a great look for an internship or for a regular day at the office. Go for a contrast collar or layer a button-up blouse under your favourite V-neck tee or black shift dress.

Geek your feet

You might be all geek chic-d out, but your look will be incomplete if you didn’t have a pair of shoes to match your outfit. Oxfords might as well be the official footwear choice for this trend. But don’t ever discount the perfect pair of high-top converse sneakers.

Once upon a time, this aesthetic might have been called frumpy, nerdy, drab or dowdy but right now, it’s about more than the clothes, it’s about the girls sporting this trend.

Honestly, these style tips are just guidelines. There are no set rules for interpreting this look and that’s the beauty of it. Do you love this trend as much as we do?
