Fashion Icon Audrey Hepburn
Fashion Icon Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn is known for a lot of things, her movies, her personality but it’s her classic style that earned her the title of Fashion Icon. She’s is the epitome of all things chic and classy. Her slim tall figure was vastly different from all the other voluptuous ladies in the 50’s that she immediately stood out. I always say if you want to be noticed, do something that nobody is doing. Audrey is the best example of that. It was her immaculate taste in clothing and her demure innocence that captured audiences and people attention, even still till today.

It’s fairly simple to get the Audrey style (unless you’re Vidya Balan); you just have to think practical and timeless. I always draw inspiration from fashion icons of the past, because their style is what lives on today but in a more modern manner. Below are some items of clothing and accessories that are essential to get the Audrey look, try them out with your existing wardrobe for a contemporary version of the classic Audrey.

The Dress

Audrey’s dresses were simple but elegant. She always showed off her tiny little waist with a line and sheath dresses. She loved to show off her arms too and did so in sleeveless dresses. Audrey would sometimes layer her dress with a long sleeve knit top, just to give it a little edge.

Sue’s Fashion tip: A Line dresses are perfect for women who are pear shaped. Hourglass figures should opt for a simple Sheath dress accentuating the waist.

Tops, Pants and Skirts

You can’t pull off an Audrey look without a crisp white high collar shirt (turned up!). Striped tops were also a big favorite, especially with Chino cropped pants. Her pants were slim fit and cropped as was the fashion at the time. Audrey wore big voluminous skirts, again to show off her small waist. Big shirts were worn with pencil skirts to give her an hour glass shape.

Hats, Sunglasses, Jewelry and Ballet Flats

Accessories were always the finishing touch for Audrey. Her every-day clothes being so simple, she vamped them up with big statement pieces. From big hats to big sunglasses, these are the things that stood out. Her jewelry, pearls being the most coveted, was almost like costume Jewelry. Big stud earrings, chunky necklaces were part of her outfit. Audrey was unusually tall compared to other actresses at the time, and hence she always wore ballet flats.
