Designer Debarun Mukherjee has found inspiration for his collection from a dark romance called Opulent and Chaste. It’s a bitter sweet tale which he has translated it into a collection for his Summer/Resort 2011 Lakmé Fashion Week. When asked about his collection Debarun says that “The fabric used is cotton kora in its natural crème tone, with appliqué of gold to give the feeling of opulence and chaste. Motifs are mainly floral which denotes romance in its purest form. I have alternately played with straight parallel lines which brings the harsh reality of the unforgiving world around us.” If you want to catch his show, his time slot is on the 13th of March, at 1:30 pm.
Psst! here is the story that sparked his imagination.
Opulent and Chaste
“Let us tell you a story. A story of two souls separated by an insurmountable mountain. Opulent was a royal heir. So royal was his demeanour that his skin would radiate brilliant hues of gold when the sun would shine on him. Chaste was a sage. They say that so pure was her soul that her blood was white. One day as the sun had turned the icy slopes of the mountain into a glassy mirror at mid day, Opulent caught a glimpse of Chaste and fell in love. From that day onwards he would wait to see her every day. The mountain was insurmountable but his love was strong. So he built a tunnel. Through the labyrinths of the treacherous mountain Opulent toiled for a hundred years till he reached the other side. As he cut through the last of the rocks and his last few breaths to greet the sunshine he found Chaste waiting for him there. Opulent looked into her pristine eyes for one last time and said “How did you know?” She softly replied “This is how it was always meant to be”. With these words Opulent breathed his last while Chaste cut her wrist. As the sun shined on them, all the heavens could see was a sea of white, gold and love. Such is the story of Opulent and Chaste.”
