Haider Akermann
Haider Akermann

Haider Ackermann is on an ultimate high, not only has he had rave reviews on his latest Fall 2011 ready to wear collection; he has also been paid the biggest complement by both Chanel and Dior. Karl Lagerfeld has said that he’d like Ackermann to replace him after he steps down from being head designer at Chanel. Dior also would like him to take over from John Galliano, so it’ll be a bidding war once both designers decide to hand over their chairs.

I’ve been keeping track of Haider’s collections since he started. As I’ve said before it’s so important to have a clear identity. His is one that cannot go unnoticed, he’s grown in strength with each passing collection and this last fall 2011 was the cherry on the top. Take a look at what has made his collection the success that everybody is talking about.

His mastery over silhouette, drape and androgyny are what makes his collections stand out. All his women, as he says “Were in the shadows and are now stepping into the light”. This strong and urban woman is slowly starting to dominate the runways, and women all over are lapping it up. This is also the first collection in which Haider has used white, something I hope he continues but in moderation.

Mixing Textures and Fabrics

Another trait is his unique way of mixing fabrics and textures. Leathers, velvets, suedes and heavy wools were juxtaposed with satins and silks to add that ebb and flow to the garments. This time his touch of dusty rose sequins gave his masculine and distressed jackets that feminine quality.

If I lived in a cold country even for a day, the first jacket I’d get is the Haider Ackermann Jacket. Whether it is a Trench or a play on the tuxedo, its a jacket that’s meant to turn heads. His lapels take on a life of their own with interesting twists and turns, something that adds immediate strength to any outfit. This collection his jackets took a close look at the sleeve. Whether bunched up worn with gloves or armholes that were relaxed it has a distinct look.

Ackermann Fall Colours

Although he started off  with his staple black and then surprising us with a few ivory pieces, models quickly turned the corner in ultra luxe jewel tones. Personally I love jewel tones when they are done in dark hues and matt-shine. Jewel tones are always an easy way to add colour to any winter wardrobe. Haider adds that edge with his unusual garments, a great way to edge up winter clothing.
