Last week, the Blue Frog had a Punk Night where Blek, Pip of the Fourth Mother & The Lightyears Explode played and this weekend they had a Metal Night with Goddess Gagged, Zygnema and Sceptre. I attend almost every gig in the city but these 2 bands really caught my attention.
Goddess Gagged
Goddess Gagged, primarily a three piece showcase of Bombay’s youngest rock talent is now a full fledged five-piece behemoth. Breathing in influences from all cross sections of nineties rock/metal following up to present day prog kings like Karnivool and Porcupine Tree, these five fantasists find cohesion within layers of intricate guitar work, crushing rhythms, solid bass lines and moody atmospherics worthy of the darkest nights of solitude.
After winning Strawberry Fields in 2010 with just a 2 month old lineup, and coming as the Second runners up at the 4th Edition of Channel [v] LaunchPad, they’ve managed to build up quiet a fan following through constant gigging.
Their gig at the Frog was undoubtedly one of their best gigs and one of the best gigs I’ve watched them live at. Tight as ever, the Blue Frog sound made the experience even better.
They’re currently recording their Debut album with Zorran Mendonsa. Expect an album with lots of atmospheric parts and some heavy break downs layered with some intense vocal lines by Siddharth Basrur. This album should be out by July/August.

The Light-years Explode
The Lightyears Explode are a 3 piece garage rock/punk band from Mumbai. With members as young as 19, they have proved that alternative/punk rock in India, is still here to stay. They won the 4th Season on Channel [v] LaunchPad this year, too.
Their music always starts of as simple Pop with emphasis on melody and groove which later gets splashed in with fast punk beats, speed and aggression.
I happened to catch them last Sunday at the Frog after watching them live last October and they grown much, much tighter since then with much energy on stage.
Their EP consists of the first 5 songs they wrote as a band and recorded in their friend’s room.
