Stirring controversy in fashion’s hallowed hallways, getting an invite to which any fashionista worth her weight would gladly give an arm for. Who could do that better than the Mother Monster of controversy herself?

Lady Gaga took home the 2011 prize for Fashion Icon at the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Awards. She wore a a corset and train by Thierry Mugler, designed by her friend and stylist Nicola Formichetti. She wore astounding 12-inch platform shoes, somehow managing to walk all on her own. By the time she hit the stage to receive the award, she had stripped down to the corset—and a spiked thong.

And the award goes to…

The songstress’ speech (which was scribbled on her palm?!) strayed toward the sentimental. “I just wanted to tell you how much this award means to young American people,” she said. “My fans, some of them don’t know who they are and they have so much trouble. They come to the Monster Ball to find who they are and they wake up in the morning and it’s that leather jacket that makes them feel like they can be anyone. Or it’s that YSL blazer that they saw in the window that makes them feel like they could be president one day. Fashion means so much to them. It’s really hard to talk about … I always felt like I had made it before I had made it because of all of you, because it was all of you that made me feel like I was a star.”

She told the crowd that when

Vogue

editor-in-chief Anna Wintour texted her with the good news that she’d won the CFDA Fashion Icon Award, Gaga mistook her for another Anna in her phone book, “so my reply was, ‘Yes, b*tch, we did it!’”

“I got a reply that said, ‘How lovely,’” Gaga quipped.

Lady Gaga let her teal hair down afterward. As the night drew on, she threw off various layers of clothing – starting the evening on the red carpet in a corseted Thierry Mugler gown over a sheer bodysuit, and ending it almost naked.By night’s end, letting loose on the dance-floor at the Boom Boom Room on the 18th floor of The Standard hotel she had stripped to pasties and a thong, shed her platform heels and was belting out a duet with Patti LaBelle.
