Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Smile Train
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Smile Train

Hi MissMalini Peeps,

Have you seen Aishwarya Rai’s promotion video for Smile Train, an organization that deals advocating cleft palate surgery. I think this is the first time I have seen Aishwarya Rai as the “face” of a charity (the set looks like a L’Oreal shoot, right?) However, this raises the issue, how charitable is Bollywood?

The first person I think of is Salman Khan and his charity, Being Human. He has had major events to promote it, not to mention those T-shirts. Another celeb known for her social work is Shabana Azmi, and her Mijwan Foundation, promoting the education of girls in Uttar Pradesh, where there is a high rate of female infanticide. She’s had a celeb filled fashion show to promote the cause and has even got Manish Malhotra to get his clothes embroidered by Mijwan embroiders.

Another intersection of fashion and social work was when Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor, on the 3 Idiots promotion tour, weaved some Chanderi saris. Kareena Kapoor even donned a gorgeous black Chanderi sari for a 3 Idiots press event.

But at the back of my mind, I always think that Bollywood can do more. I mean, Hollywood stars are always pushing their causes. So MissMalini readers, do you think Bollywood has done enough in the social work/charity department?  Which other Bollywood stars go above and beyond for social causes?
