The third day of Lakme Fashion Week Winter-Festive 2011 in Mumbai, saw some serious Bollywood star power. Legends like Hema Malini and Sridevi made the flashbulbs pop a million frames per minute and Vidya Balan was also present for her close friend Sabyasachi’s show. What stood out however, was that most of the stars wore sarees – on the ramp and off it!
Ranjit Rodricks gets all starry-eyed over the Bollywood beauties.
1) Hema Malini Memerizes
There’s no doubt about the fact that Bollywood legend Hema Malini still rocks it like crazy. While daughter Esha Deol opened the show for Shayamal and Bhumika, it was Hema (who was their show-stopper) who drew thunderous applause. The person sitting next to me said, “She looks ethereal” and quite frankly, it actually looked like she glided down the ramp instead of walked. Sigh! Legends are made of these!
2) Shraddha In Sabysachi’s Saree
All smiles and pretty in a cherubic way, young actress Shraddha Kapoor stole our hearts in a floral saree by Sabyasachi. The designer has most of Bollywood wearing his creations these days and Shraddha seems like yet another of his devotees. Her lithe frame did wonders for his drape and her peaches-and-cream complexion more than complemented the blooms on her attire.
3) Sridevi’s Apsara Avatar
The other legendary Bollywood star, Sridevi, arrived with husband Boney Kapoor for Sabysachi’s show, and she too wore one of his sarees. Looking like an Apsara, Sridevi glowed as she obliged fans and photographers for pictures. She wore gold and pearl earrings but left her swan-like neck bare, making for a lovely effect. We liked the fact the she allowed her garment to speak more than her jewelry.
4) Sona’s Saree by Kallol
If’ it’s a Kallo Dutta creation you’re wearing, you can be sure it will be voluminous. And that’s exactly what singer Sona Mohapatra wore for one of the earlier shows in the day. The white polka-dotted saree had a red border and a huge coat thrown over it. The sleeves were also billowy. If you must make a fashion statement, make it BIG, we say and Sona’s style-sense seems to agree with us!
5) Chocolate Boy Models Cappuccino Collection
Designer Pria Kataria’s collection was in hues of cappuccino and it came as no surprise that she chose actor Arjan Bajwa to be her male show-stopper. With his chocolate-boy looks, Arjan did justice to the long tunic Pria had him wear on the ramp. Sleeveless and belted at the waist, our fellow journalists though he looked a bit like Hrithik Roshan. Do you agree?
6) White On Black Applique
One of the best collections we have seen so far would have to be by Debarun from Kolkatta. The designer sent out his models in black silhouettes, heavily appliqued in white. The amount of work that must have gone into each garment would have been staggering. We loved the effort Debarun has put into his garments and we wish that those party-hearty designers out there would learn a thing or two from the hard-work this designer has put in.
