Karan Johar (on India’s Most Desirable): “You cannot have an equal connection with anyone. Somewhere if you play the subservient part you maintain a friendship – there is no such thing as an equal friendship. Two powerful people cannot be friends. There will have to be one of them who takes a back seat… and that’s invariably me.”

I have often wondered why major figures in Bollywood cannot be friends. I have discussed the catty rivalries and lack of friendships between Bollywood actresses in an older post. It always seemed to me that there were more rivalries between Bollywood’s leading ladies than leading men. I also somewhat remember Katrina Kaif saying that Zindagi Na Milege Dobara could not have been made with four mainstream actresses in the lead during the press rounds for that film. However, what Karan said above, to Simi Garewal on India’s Most Desirable, caught me by surprise. It really gives a new light to his friendship with Shah Rukh Khan.

In Hollywood, you always see stars being quite friendly with one another, such as Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore, or even Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.  Sure, Kareena Kapoor is best friends with Amrita Arora, but would that still be the case if Amrita‘s career was that of Katrina Kaif‘s?

That is not to say that Hollywood stars are “friendlier” than their Bollywood counterparts, they have their tiffs too.  For instance, Gwenyth Paltrow was once inseparable from Madonna, but now the two are not even seen together. Was there an clash of egos in that case as well? Is that a cost of fame? What do you think MissMalini readers?
