Happy Birthday Dharmendra!
Happy Birthday Dharmendra!

Yesterday was the birthday of one of Indian cinema’s greatest living legends, Dharmendra. He has entertained us with passion and conviction for over fifty years. On his special day, we look at some of his most memorable songs which will always be really close to my heart. We’d love to know some of your favorite Dharmendra movies and songs as well so bring ’em on.

1) Yeh Dosti from Sholay

This is the ultimate ode to friendship. Dharmendra was the main lead in this classic along with Amitabh Bachchan. Sholay was a huge blockbuster and it’s still everyone’s favorite action movie ever with Dharmendra playing Veeru to perfection. The unforgettable Jai-Veeru friendship and his lovable relationship with Basanti (Hema Malini) made it extra special.

2) Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas from Blackmail

A wonderfully romantic song sung by Kishore Kumar, it’s truly one of my all-time favorites. There is the gorgeous Rakhee reading love letters from Dharmendra and its amazing to see how good he is in a mushy flick despite being more popular for his action films.

3) Main Jat Yam Pagla Deewana from

Prattigya

It had the typical Dharam dance moves and some drunken antics which were hilarious. Everyone loved the whole Dharmendra madness and the song became a smashing success. Another adorable example of the awesome chemistry that Hema Malini and Dharmendra shared on and off screen.

4) Arey Rafta Rafta Dekho from Kahaani Kismet Ki

Another really power packed song with Dharam paaji at his flirtatious best. We really dig his crazy dance moves and he looks real cute as he tries to woo Rekha.

5) Aaj Mausam Bada Beimaan Hai from

Loafer

Mumtaz and Dharmendra have the most memorable romantic chemistry that leaves you swooning. This song which sees their love blossom is so typically 70s. I heart the funky fashion and Mohammad Rafi’s golden voice.

And finally,

6) Main Yamla Pagla from Yamla Pagla

Deewana

Yamla Pagla Deewana was extra special as it had Dharmendra return to the big screen along with his sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol. I particularly love the title track which features all three of them and some fab Punjabi Bhangra style moves.
