On Day 3 of the India Resort Fashion Week at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Goa, Mumbai-based designer Babita Malkani woke the locals up from the reverie with an energetic show which had all the models dancing on the ramp right through the show.
Her collection was called Beach Bonita and according to the designer, “The collection sets free the playful experience of soft sands, jovial waves and flirting sun into glamorously styled silhouettes!”
Inspired during a holiday in the Spanish island of Ibiza, the exhilarating collection is a one big party of kaftans, palazzo jumpsuits, drape dresses and short flirty dresses.
Using colours of the sand, sea and sky, Babita has incorporated a stylized dyeing technique to merge the hues of nature, thus streaming it into a cozy riot of hues. Using this special treatment on her fabrics, she triumphantly recreated the beach affair and the spontaneous fluidity of the waves, sand, sky and its breathtaking sunsets.
In terms of texturing and detailing, Babita has incorporated glittering sequins, intricate crochet patchworks, dangling fringes, appliqués and cut-work – all of which play the part of sea shells, gravel and pebble and the hidden coves along the Mediterranean beach side.
“The beach, in all its spontaneous activity and vigor, is a metaphor for joyful living. Beach Bonita celebrates that invigorating feeling,” says Babita as way of explaining the exuberance of the collection!
