Fashion Round up 2011
Fashion Round up 2011

What would any year end be without a fashion round up of some of the most epic moments in fashion? Here is a look at some of these fashion masters and mishaps that have caught my attention over the last year. Some of these may have actually skipped your mind, so read on for all the juicy fashion scoop of 2011!

MASTERS

No. 1 Masters of Fashion – The Royal Wedding and Pippa Middleton

The biggest wedding of 2011 and the bride looked stunning in a Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen) dress. The months prior to the wedding, all talk was about what the dress would look like and the many arrangements for the big day. However on the day, the spotlight was quickly turned onto Pippa Middleton and her assets, not bad for the sister of a princess!

No. 2 Masters of Fashion – The Met’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty Exhibition

I don’t have the best memory, my friends will attest to that, but I shall remember every moment and feeling walking through the Alexander Mcqueen: Savage Beauty  exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan. Those who were lucky enough to experience this exhibit will no doubt remember it as the melancholic highlight of 2011.

BTW. You might remember this picture from our Desi Girl Traveler post.

No. 3 Masters of Fashion – Haider Ackermann’s Spring Summer ’12 Collection

It was such a buzz in Paris and world wide once pictures and videos of this collection hit the internet. Even those who did not see it live were entranced by Haider Akermann’s spring/summer 2011 collection. Languid movements of fabric took on a life of their own making this collection the most memorable of the entire year. Putting this quiet designer into a fashion league of his own, ahead of any of his competition.

No. 4 Masters of Fashion – Versace Brings it for H&M

<Sorry! This image is no longer available.>

NO one could be sadder than I that the collection sold out online as soon as it was launched. Versace’s collection for H&M was this years biggest hit. Clothing or rather fashion is quickly becoming a luxury with this terrible recession. Yet many who were lucky enough to get their hands on some of the Versace for H&M items were snatching everything they could get. What a great move on H&M’s part to involve high end designer with their high street brand. Genius.

No. 5 Masters of Fashion – Lady Gaga Lays an Egg

<Sorry! This image is no longer available.>

This is going to be known forever, making even the meat dress seem strangely normal. I decided after much deliberation, that this fashion moment was meant to go on the masters list and not the mishap. Many slammed the move and said it was weird and ridiculous, but on flip side, it’s innovative and exciting. Who else could pull off with such success a move such as this. I for one applaud Lady Gaga on being so unabashedly eccentric.

MISHAPS

No 1. Mishaps of Fashion – The Fall from Grace of John Galliano

<Sorry! This image is no longer available.>

Who would have thought the thick brow John Galliano would have ever been an antisemitic? Seems like everybody does now, considering his rant at the La Perle bar in Paris. Since this scandal Dior has still been in search of their next design head. I’m sure 2012 will be able to tell us who will take the legendary Galliano’s place.

No. 2 Mishaps of Fashion – Battle of the Badly Dressed Pop Stars

Pop star battle
Pop star battle

Everyone from Britney Spears, Nikki Minaj, Kreayshawn and no. 1 contender for the worse dressed pop star title – Kesha, were responsible for some God awful outfits. What were they thinking? Actually I know exactly what they were thinking. Who can dress the most trashy/ tacky/ gaudy. Well let me tell you girls, you succeeded and boy are we hoping that you’ll put an end to this NONSENSE and concentrate on some good quality music. Err… we can hope can’t we?

No. 3 Mishaps of Fashion – LMFAO Brings Back Animal Print Spandex

lmfao
lmfao

I never thought I’d see the day that would bring back those ghastly animal print spandex tights and speedos from the 1980s. Yet LMFAO with juvenile lyrics and fist pumping beats have been throwing their outlandish style at us. Although I hate it, got to say it works for them, after all they are sexy and they know it (terrible humour, I know).

N0. 4 Mishap of Fashion – D&G Showcases for the Last Time

D&G
D&G

The economy being as abysmal as it is brought a close to Dolce & Gabana’s youth targeted line D&G. They showcased their last with a spring/summer 2012 collection. We’ll see a lot of the D&G identity in their main house collection though, so I’m not too sad about this loss. As they said “From the upcoming seasons, D&G will become part of Dolce & Gabbana, giving even more strength and energy to our collection”. Can’t wait!

No. 5 Mishaps of Fashion – Christina Aguilera Stops the Bandage Dress Trend

Honestly, I don’t know whether to thank or feel sorry for Christina Aquilera for her appearance at the 2011 American Music Awards. I was getting fed up with the number of Hervé Léger dresses turning up everywhere, and finally Christina put and end to that trend. The poor thing isn’t obese or anything, but surely she should know that if you’ve got the pounds you need some control spanx under that bandage dress. Haven’t really seen too many bandage dresses after that incident. Amen to that!
