Colors Screen Awards

It’s that time of the year again, where the flurry of Bollywood award shows start – and to kick it off was the Colors Screen Awards. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy award shows – I like to kick back and enjoy the clothes, performances and of course scripted attempts at drama. The actual awards are, unfortunately, secondary; I think this says a lot about our award functions (or maybe just me?), but let’s admit it, these things are more for entertainment and publicity than talent recognition. I’ve enjoyed the last two Screen awards, so I was looking forward to this one – and was interested in seeing how Colors would handle it, since previously the Screen awards have been with Star.

Awards

Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan

Ranbir Kapoor and Vidya Balan won the top honors of the evening (best actor, male and female). I haven’t seen The Dirty Picture so can’t comment on Vidya’s award (but considering the other nominations, I can’t say it’s a surprise she won it). Ranbir, on the other hand, definitely deserved this award so I’m glad he got it. Rockstar was pretty much his best performance to date!

Also, I’m happy for Mohit Chauhan‘s best singer award for Phir Se Ud Chala; I love that guy’s voice and he sung amazingly well for Rockstar.

Performances

Priyanka Chopra

Katrina Kaif

I loved Priyanka Chopra‘s performance; she did a mix of songs including Chaiya Chaiya (and fittingly performed atop a train!) Katrina Kaif, on the other hand, started off the function with a classical version of Sheila Ki Jawani – which I loved; I never get sick of SKJ but it was good to see a different version as well. She then closed the function with the mandatory Chikni Chameli, which, to her credit, she did well.

Shahid Kapoor

Shahid Kapoor killed it with  his performance; he is definitely one of the best dancers in Bollywood today. He did a mix of Sajh Dhaj Ke and Mallo Malli from his film Mausam. He also did a series of mini performances with Chitrangda Singh, and I’ve gotta say, the two have some chemistry. Shahid’s sporting a new haircut that gives him an edgier look, so he doesn’t look all chocolate boy next to Chitrangda, and somehow I am liking the pairing. Someone cast them together? 🙂

Clothes

I’m no fashion expert, but I thought most people turned out really well-dressed for this event. Some of my favourites:

Deepika Padukone

Loved this teal gown on Deepika Padukone; she looked gorrrgeous, and the colour suits her well. Also loved the fishtail braid and make-up!

Priyanka Chopra and Asin

Loved Priyanka’s red and cream sari, and Asin‘s white gown and red lips!

Shahid Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor

The boys turned out well too; Shahid looked dapper in his suit and I really like his haircut… I’ve always preferred him in shorter hair, and as mentioned earlier, this particular haircut gives him an edgier look. Also liking the red and black combo on Ranbir!

Drama

What’s an awards function without some drama, especially a Bollywood one? To be fair to Screen, they didn’t overdo it, but two things stuck out:

1) They gave the best jodi award to Shahrukh and Priyanka!

Come on. I can think of so many other pairs this year that had better chemistry than them (Shahid-Sonam, Ranbir-Nargis, Hrithik-Katrina etc). Considering all the rumors doing the rounds about SRK and PC, this just seemed like a forced move to get some more coverage for the awards. And the two winners didn’t look all that comfortable either! (Especially since SRK avoided calling PC on stage for a segment of his where he called many leading ladies up to dance with him.)

2) Deepika Padukone gave Ranbir the best actor award

Really? *Lol* But then again, she agreed to give the award and she must have known Ranbir would win it. And he didn’t seem too perturbed either, bending down to touch her feet and talking about “the girl he loved” during his acceptance speech. Probably just some promotion for that film they’re doing together, and of course it’s always entertainment value for the audience!

Did you watch the show? Your thoughts?
