Rihanna can sell a trend as well as she sells a tune. She now joins the ranks of other musicians, who have their own fashion labels to their credit. British high street brand, River Island announced that Rihanna will be working on her own line of clothing with them. Rihanna, since her drastic shift of style, as in her music video Umbrella, has been pushing the envelope in her dress sense. Her fashion choices have always made a statement on the red carpet and the videos. Wonder what this Bajan-belle will have to offer?
Since her Good Girl Gone Bad release, Rihanna pushed the pedal with all her might and hasn’t looked back. Pushing her boundaries in music and fashion, her style has been talked of in almost every fashion magazine. Right from her graphic bobs to the blood-red hair, she has gone through trends from one genre to the other. Rihanna’s style is built from old school fashion favourites to futuristic influences. Studded shorts, vintage tees, and graphic shoulder pads with spike detailing seemed to be her most favoured looks.
The British high-street label seems to be fitting Rihanna’s personal sense of style. Their mix of edgy rockstar detailings with dainty feminine styles in their women’s collections cuts close to the Russian Roulette’s own choice of stylistic expression. Question is, will the audience be bold enough to walk around in sheer leggings and spiked shoulder pads? On the flipside, if the collection is diluted to fit commercial needs, then the “Rihanna” factor will be lost, no? That’s a juggle River Islands has willfully taken, I guess!
Music has always had a long-term relationship with fashion and over the last few years a host of well-known music giants have launched their own fashion labels. Gwen Stefani’s LAMB has been the most well-received and respected amongst the rest. Will Rihanna get ahead, we’ll just have to wait and watch… or should I say, “Shop”?!
