10 Fun Things to Do Around the Singapore Grand Prix (Part II)

Malini Agarwal

As I was blogging this it became clear to me that all my pictures were never going to fit in just one post (plight of the trigger happy I suppose!) and since I love to let my pictures do the telling I figured why not part-two it? So in the first ever blog sequel here goes: 5 more fun things to do around the Singapore Grand Prix 🙂 xoxo

6. Singapore Flyer and a 6D Ride

Towering 165 metres above the city center, the Singapore Flyer is the World’s largest Observation Wheel. Hop on for a 30 minute flight and watch the city come to life, as they say “a moving experience at every turn” 🙂 Clever.

If you’re feeling super romantic you can also book one of their dinner capsules (which goes around twice over a 4-course meal.)

Or a Moët & Chandon Champagne Flight for two perhaps? They’ve really go it all.

What’s awesome is that GP ticket holders get unlimited free rides during the Formula 1 weekend which is a great way to escape the heat in one of their 28 air conditioned capsules, and if you time it just right you could be descending just as the city lights come on! The cool thing about all of Singapore’s tourist attractions is that each ride comes with a full range of supporting experiences. The Singapore Flyer for instance has a retro food court (where Nowshie posed convincingly as my sidecar rickshaw driver!)

Adrenaline junkies will love Singapore’s Cutting Edge XD 6D Motion Ride Theater. How 6D? Well you take your 3D movie, throw in motion chairs, a wind machine, water and aromas and voila! 6D.

7. Clarke Quay & Dempsey Hill

The nightlife in Singapore is pretty awesome too. Clarke Quay offers a colourful kaleidoscope of restaurants, wine bars, entertainment spots and retail shops and has a variety of pubs, bars and restaurants to pamper every palate.

The bustling market atmosphere around a colorful fountain park comes alive amidst the rows of charming shophouses, pushcarts, and five-foot-way merchants.

My Twitter peeps from Singapore suggested I try out The Pump Room microbrewery which offers a beer tasting line up that you’ll love!

I also spotted The Rupee Room which I hear is all about Bollywood (woohoo!) so if you’re missing the motherland, hop in for a hip-shake! 🙂

If you’re looking for something even more luxurious, hit up Dempsey Hill, that’s where you’ll find places like The White Rabbit, a gorgeous restaurant & bar housed in an awe-inspiring, beautifully restored old chapel, set to the theme of Alice in Wonderland, what’s not to love?

They also have the best deconstructed black forrest cake I’ve ever tasted, yum.

8. Gardens by the Bay

One of Singapore’s newest and most astounding attractions has got to be the Garden’s by the Bay. A project by the National Parks Board, it is an integral part of the Singapore government’s strategy to raise the quality of life with lush greenery and flora, transforming Singapore from a Garden City to a City in a Garden.

Gardens by the Bay

The most striking features are the supertrees, tree-like structures that dominate the Gardens’ landscape with heights that range between 82ft and 160ft. They are vertical gardens fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees, to harness solar energy. At night, the Supertrees come alive with a light and music show called the OCBC Garden Rhapsody. Gorgeous.

Get this: Gardens by the Bay welcomed their millionth visitor after just 7 weeks of opening! It really is larger than life though and kinda surreal –  to see this natural world inside a giant dome, very futuristic. I kept thinking Jurassic Park, especially when the doors of the Cloud Forest opened onto a giant waterfall and took my breath away.

9. Arab Street & 1 Altitude

The shopping district known as Arab Street actually is a great place to explore early evening (because most of the shops shut by 8pm). I spotted some really darling little boutiques and of course we had the best street-style Indian-Singaporean food ever at Nowshad’s request (yes it’ll all be in his food blog I promise foodies!)

Zam Zam

Funnily enough the cheap and cheerful restaurant that we ate at even has a Facebook page!

But more than anything the Persian carpets, hookah parlours and stunning Mosque give this area a quaint and delightful ambiance. I’d love to go back and explore some more!

Later on we followed the after-dark luxury trail to 1 Altitude, kinda like Mumbai’s Aer but bigger and higher up! Located at the top of 1 Raffles Place, 1 Altitude is apparently the world’s highest al fresco bar! Also you can see the most of the Grand Prix circuit from here and they feature live bands and DJs throughout the week.

1 Altitude

I quite enjoyed my Singapore Sling and Monster Mojito although Nowshad thought they were a bit too sweet for his liking. I think the Singaporeans and I share a love for sweet drinks 🙂

10. Sentosa

Our last stop on the trip was Sentosa Beach which is essentially just one big entertainment paradise that you can buggy around. Everything from Universal Studios to the Wave House and indoor Sky Diving! It was actually really fun(ny) watching people surf for the first time in The Double Flowrider and awesome to see how The Flow Barrel conjures up 10 foot waves for experienced surfers to coast right through.

Btw, good news if you’re hoping to do some night surfing, they’re open till midnight on weekends! Beach bums can soak up some sunshine and swim at the Tanjong Beach Club Calafornia style and adrenaline junkies enjoy!

iFly Singapore also looks amazing.

iFly Singapore

Standing 56.5ft tall, iFly Singapore is the world’s largest indoor skydive simulator. In fact the whole experience is themed to feel like an actual flight and allows anyone from as young as seven years old to skydive in a safe and affordable indoor setting. Wanna Fly?

11. Bonus! It’s Foodie Heaven

I mean it’s Singapore, so you simply must try the local cuisine which is – in a word – scrumptious! But that’s a blog of a different flavor that resident foodie Nowshad Rizwanullah will be posting soon, bon appetite! 🙂 xoxo
