Katrina Kaif recently returned to Mumbai from Chicago (where she was shooting for Dhoom 3), and at the airport, walked through the green channel and headed home. What she left behind though, was luggage with declarable items in it – which she sent her assistants to pick up for her, even though passengers are not allowed to re-enter the terminal once they’ve cleared customs. This resulted in quite a bit of trouble – here’s what happened.
According to TOI, Katrina’s assistants (who were travelling with her) returned to the terminal to collect her bags, even though – under normal circumstances – they should not have been allowed back in. They then tried to leave with the bags, an iPad, a large sum of money, and two bottles of whiskey (which the assistants had purchased at a duty free). However, the deputy commissioner of the Customs’s Air Intelligence Unit stopped them and asked why these bags were not declared before. The declaration forms showed that the luggage belonged to Katrina, but were signed for by her assistants. Due to this, the assistants were then fined for carrying undisclosed goods and not declaring the money on them. It seems that Katrina wanted to leave the airport stress-free and have her assistants bring her luggage for her later on. But according to rules, everyone needs to keep their own luggage with them, hence the trouble. Katrina was not called back to the airport that night, but will be summoned for a statement soon.
