Fifteen years ago a young talent named Nicolas Ghesquiere stepped into a fashion house known for their petite sizing, and culture of uncompromising standards. It wasearlier announced that Ghesquiere will be leaving Balenciaga. The split is being called a ‘joint decision’ between the designer and Balenciaga, with this month being his last. The reasons for his departure however, are not clearly known. A statement released by a spokesperson from PPR suggested that Ghesquiere’s exit is due to his longing for a new adventure, having successfully reinvented Balenciaga’s brand image as it’s known today.
Since his early days when Ghesquiere was all but 25 years old, he affected Balenciaga significantly, turning it into a powerhouse of a brand and a favourite among top labels. Ghesquiere paid attention to cuts, especially on garments for larger women. Known for his definitive science fiction inspired style, he managed to produce a meeting between ‘sensuality and space’. With a power list of clients including Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue (remember the infamous ‘Slow’ outfit), he is surely one of the world’s most respected designers.
While this news is getting a strong initial response from fashion insiders, you can’t help but question the future for both Balenciaga and Ghesquiere… only time will tell. But for now enjoy this Ghesquiere for Balenciaga S/S 09 show, which is one of my favourite collections of all time.
