Diwali – the season of lights is one occasion where we dress up in all our traditional finery but if you’re a bit unsure of what to wear, I’ve rounded up 5 tips to keep in mind with runway inspiration to boot. Have you got your pen and notepad out? It’s time to take notes!

1) Velvet Touch

Want to give your outfit a touch of opulence? Opt for a velvet blouse that you can pair with your sari. In fact if you have nothing new to wear this year, just get a new blouse – whether strapless or backless it will give your ensemble a new dimension.

2) Indo-Western

Hate the heavy lehengas and want to wear something aside from anarkalis? Skip that by choosing a a fusion wear outfit. Wear a flowy maxi skirt with a heavily embroidered bodice. Score points for standing out in the crowd.

3) Go Bright!

Stand out against a sea of pinks and reds by opting for hues like turquoise, yellows and jewel tones. These are the hottest colours of the season!

4) Wear The Pants

Really want to turn heads? Opt for dhoti-trousers. Not only are they incredibly chic but super comfy too! Pair with sky-scraper heels and a richly embroidered top.

5) Wear a Lehenga-Sari

Get the best of both worlds by opting for the lehenga-sari silhouette. The skirt is less restrictive than a sari and you can drape your pallu anyway you like.

Style Tips:

  • Remember if you’re wearing heavy outfits keep the make-up muted. A pale mouth and a touch of kohl is all you need.
  • Don’t wear elaborate hairdos! You will only end up looking like a pageant girl. Loose curls and voluminous hair  work well with Indian wear.
  • Footwear is also an important factor to your outfit – wear gold kolhapuri chappals or mojris. If not gold or silver peep-toes work equally well.

Have a fashionable and safe Diwali!
