As part of the Because I Am a Girl initiative, Plan and 10×10 are working to raise awareness that educating and empowering girls can break the cycle of poverty in just one generation. What a brilliant thought! The centre of 10×10’s campaign is a major feature film — Girl Rising — that tells the true stories of real girls succeeding against impossible odds. Now this is one documentary I have to see, and I think you should too.

PS. Thank you Neera Chanani for telling me about this film xoxo

Girl Rising

Girl Rising features narration by stars such as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys, Kerry Washington along with a handful of other NGO partners.

The film spotlights unforgettable girls like Sokha, an orphan who rises from the dumps of Cambodia to become a star student and an accomplished dancer; Suma, who composes music to help her endure forced servitude in Nepal and today crusades to free others; and Ruksana, an Indian street-child whose father sacrifices his own basic needs for his daughter’s dreams. Each girl is paired with a renowned writer from her native country. Edwidge Danticat, Sooni Taraporevala and Aminatta Forna tell the girls’ stories, each with profound resonance.
