Bollywood’s chameleon has done it again. I just watched (via live HBO satellite feed!) the long awaited Game of Thrones Season 3 premiere, and I did a triple take when the newest cast member appeared in the opening scene. Though initially hard to recognize with all the make-up, and detailed GoT costuming, there was no mistaking Anil Kapoor in yet his latest international role.
The plot picked up exactly where we left off at the end of Season 2… here’s a recap since it’s been a while.
Joffrey is set to marry Margaery Tyrell as Sansa Stark is cast aside (to her great relief). After being wounded in battle, Tyrion Lannister is unsure of his future as his father Tywin swoops in as the hero of the Battle of Blackwater, and replaces Tyrion as Hand of the King. Meanwhile in Qarth, Daenerys retrieves her dragons and moves forward on plans to raise an army, and return to Westeros to reclaim her throne.
Back in Winterfell, Thoen was defeated and betrayed by his own men, but not before the Stark family castle was set to torch. The last scene from Season 2 was North of the Wall, where the White Walker army is seen marching South as Sam cowers in fear… enter the new hero!
The Season 3 opener introduces a previously unknown Stark family member, Sir Arun “Mr. Westeros” Stark. We don’t yet know much about his background, but legend has it that Arun Stark’s lineage is closer to that of a dire wolf than any living person, and that he can channel his inner-wolf in times of battle.
Within the first 20 minutes we see Arun rescue his distant cousin Jon Snow from the Wildlings, and slice through a band of White Walkers, thus revealing a weakness of the undead army that may save the entire Seven Kingdoms! Apparently, the White Walkers are blinded by the sight of hearty chest hair… the hairier the chest, the weaker they become. Mr. Westeros is basically invincible in this regard, and he may just be the miracle needed to restore peace to the land.
