Makeup with Marvie - skin & eyebrows
Makeup with Marvie – skin & eyebrows

I had the pleasure of a fantastic one-on-one make up lesson with Marvie Beck recently and she gave me some killer tips! The good news is that her salon on Turner Road, Bandra actually offers makeup classes (just like this) so you can go in armed with your pots of makeup and come out fully equipped to correctly use them! Take a look at what I learned in pix and video and leave me a comment if you found any of her tips helpful, OR even if you have any more questions for me to ask her the next time we meet for a session 🙂 xoxo

1. Skincare is Key.

Marvie couldn’t stress this enough, she said that if you are a daily make up user than you need to focus on skincare at least 3 times a week.

First: Exfoliate, this helps to removes dead cells. Find a gentle scrub and work it all over your face. She swears by the Mary Kay timewise range but it has been sadly discontinued in India so either bug your uncle from abroad to send you some or stay tuned for a good substitute! She mentioned that Dermalogica’s Daily Exfoliator (that comes in a box/powder form) is equally good, so I plan to try that.

Second: Moisturise. Don’t use a water based moisturizer, use one designed for slightly mature skin (like Mary Kay’s age-fighting moisturiser) massage your moisturiser into the key pressure points on your face to boost circulation. Doing this 2 to 3 times a week will serve as a mini facial and then you can get a proper facial once every two months.

Then Conceal. For me she recommended the Bobbi Brown dark peach concealer or MAC NW 35 concealer coupled with MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid foundation in shade 43.5 to suit my skin tone. (She also suggested I try the Chanel Aqualumiere foundation for oily skin.)

Next layer on the foundation (with a flat brush like MAC’s 190) and then buff it into your skin in a circular motion. Use a translucent powder if you’re going to be in an an air-conditioned environment and if not use a compact powder (for me she chose the MAC Studio Fix NC 40).

2. Eyebrows frame the face.

Well groomed eyebrows can give your face the perfect shape especially if you have high check bones! Use an angled eyebrow brush (like my MAC 208 brush/brow shader duo) and a stone/cement color, never black. Always start from the center of your eyebrow not the inside corner so you don’t look angry!

Also use a highlighter for your brow bone. Highlighters that reflect light make the area appear bigger. You can even use gel or water to push your eyebrows into place and brush over with a little hairspray to fix. When you have defined eyebrows your checkbones automatically soften.
