When I started working on my first film, which is the upcoming punjabi film titled Punjab Bolda, with Sarabjit Cheema in the lead and releasing on August 15th, I never knew how big the Punjabi film industry was!
We all know about Bollywood and Hollywood, but let me tell you that Pollywood is coming up and it’s coming up big! Let’s be honest… Most Bollywood movies are actually Punjabi films with a bigger budget and a little Hindi thrown in. But apart from that, everything else is Punjabi: Punjabi people, Punjabi culture, Punjabi music, Punjabi words, Punjabi locations and even Punjabi stories! Everything most of the time is set in a Punjabi mahaul (surrounding). So that’s why I’m a little extra Punjabi now. Main ik punjabi sherni haan! (I’m a punjabi tigress!)
And I love the punjabi sets! Believe me, being on a punjabi set means lot of amazing and tasty food (mind you, sometimes I thought we are a catering service more than a movie set!)
Also what I thoroughly believe is that the nicer and warmer the atmosphere on a set is, the more it translates onto the final screen. The film has a heart and soul, unlike big budget films which are more corporate nowadays.
And apart from a heart and soul, Punjabi films have a big fan following too! Punjabis all over the world always go and watch Punjabi films! Even if a big budget Bollywood film is releasing on the same day! They are proud of their culture and their cinema and rightly so 🙂
The Pollywood industry is getting bigger and better year by year! Did you know that a lot of our Bollywood stars have actually started their careers in the Pollywood industry?! Jimmy Shergill, Mahi Gill even Om Puri. It won’t take long till big actors from Hindi films will start working in Punjabi cinema too. After all, Punjab is the mother of most film creation.
