The royal and ancient city of Jaipur in Rajasthan has long since inspired artists across the centuries with its beautiful forts, palaces, vibrant colours, stories of valour and tales of romance. One such artist to be seduced by the city’s history is the petite and pretty Delhi-based designer, Mandira Wirk, who showed off her intricately detailed bridal collection at the ongoing India Bridal Week in Mumbai.
Mandira’s garments reflected the traditional crafts of Jaipur with the extravagant use of meenakari work which was merged with resham, zari and jewel work. And if that was not enough glitz, Mandira added more glamour by incorporating gota and mirror work as well.
The show opened with a line-up of models gliding down the ramp, holding lanterns in their hand, which made for a truly magical effect. Then, the gorgeous Sahar Biniaz (Miss Universe Canada 2012) emerged from the wings in a gold lehenga with a black net over-lay, teamed with a richly embroidered jacket-blouse.
In particular, we loved the pieces which featured multicoloured embroidered motifs of exotic avian like peacocks, parrots and flamingos. We also loved the will-power kurtas which were richly fashioned in peacock colours and worn with gold lamé shararas.
And finally, when it was time for the show to come to a close, four strapping men, clad in crisp white kurta-pajamas, carried a golden palanquin on to the ramp. As soon as they set it down, singer and actress Sophie Choudry emerged from it, wearing a dazzling blue and gold corset over a lehenga – both of which were heavily encrusted with sparkling crystals.
Sophie also wore a matching lace and net dupatta on her head which cascaded elegantly down her back.
