Witches of East End and The Originals
Witches of East End and The Originals

Vampires and Witches seem to be taking over the small screen this season. When these shows were released in 2013, it was tough to tell if they were going to be popular like the shows that preceded them. Now that most of them have been renewed for another season, we know they are here to stay. We recommend you give them a shot!

Unfortunately, 2014 marks the end of one of the most successful vampire based TV shows, True Blood. However, there is the popular Vampire Diaries, and recently released shows that wil take the vampire legacy forward.

The Originals

This show is as original in concept as its name. Despite being a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, it has been able to garner appreciation for being different. The story revolves around the Mikaelson siblings, otherwise known as the original vampires. The show stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Claire Holt, Phoebe Tonkin and Charles Michael Davis. The show premiered on October 3, 2013. CW has recently announced its renewal for season 2.

Dracula

This show falls under the drama/horror/thriller genre. The story is of a man who comes to a new town as an entrepreneur and his actual goal is to seek revenge on those who ruined his life in earlier centuries. But the obstacle is in the form of woman he falls in love with, an apparent reincarnation of his dead wife. It stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jessica De Gouw, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Thomas Kretschmann. The show garnered a great audience thanks to the plot and the impeccable art direction. The show premiered on October 25, 2013.

On the other hand, the theme of witchcraft had been left unexploited for the past few years. Come autumn 2013 and (…Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and caldron bubble…) there we had witchcraft on TV.

Witches of East End

The series stars Julia Ormond, Madchen Amick, Rachel Boston, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Daniel Di Tomasso and Eric Winter in lead roles. It is about Joanna Beauchamp, a witch and mother of Freya and Ingrid, the next generation witches. The show is based on a book of the same name written by Melissa de la Cruz. It premiered on October 6, 2013, a mix of romance, magic, drama and mystery. (I’m secretly hoping for a Channing Tatum cameo here sometime :P)

Sleepy Hollow

This show is based on an 1820 short story ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ by Washington Irwing. After the Headless Horseman is brought back from his grave by unknown people, Ichabod Crane also rises from his. Crane died in 1781 but is back to solve the killings, assumed to be caused by the Headless Horseman. The witchcraft here comes in through the hero’s wife who cast the spell to bind him to the Horseman. She guides him through his dreams as he can free her by defeating the killer. It stars Tom Milson, Nicole Beharie, Orlando Jones and Katia Winter. The show premiered on September 16, 2013.

So who are you gonna choose this season?
