Manish Malhotra flagged off Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2014 with a whiff of old world romanticism. The collection titled ‘Summer Affair’ was noticeably different than Manish’s trademark looks; a clean and easy collection, perfect for summer festivities. Young love was represented on the runway with new versatile shapes in desaturated shades of pink and blue, grey, navy, and white.
Anti fit cropped tops, paired with full length skirts, provided a nice alternative to the standard ‘lehnga-choli’. Zipped saris, pleated lehngas with pockets, kurtas that can be worn as dresses, neatly tailored trousers, and boxy crops were the dominant silhouettes. Lightweight fabrics like georgette organza, tulle and Chantilly lace with soft thread embroidery are perfect to take you through the day.
The menswear wasn’t as strong as the women’s line, and could have perhaps been left off the runway. The bright pink story seemed a bit out of place, and while we give Manish due credit for adding prints to his line, he could have applied the story with more innovation.
It is always a pleasure to see a designer step away from his comfort zone and present a fresh new take on his signature style. We can’t wait to see what Manish Malhotra has to offer next season!
