You asked, we answered! On my blog on the best red lipsticks, you asked how to pick the right shade that goes with your skin tone. I asked someone who’s considered the best in the business – Stafford Braganza – National Makeup Artist, Lancôme India to dish his expertise on this.

Right skin tone for your lipstick

To find the right shade of “Red Lipstick” means finding out about your skin tone. Once you know your skin tone, it is a walk in the park to find the correct shade of red that is custom-made for you. To determine your skin tone, stand in natural light and look at the back of your wrist. If the skin inside your wrist shows red or green undertones, your skin tone is WARM. If your undertones are peach, yellow or olive, your skin tone is NEUTRAL. Blue and pink undertones mean your skin tone is COOL.

Dusky:

Esha Gupta
Priyanka Chopra

If you have darker skin, like Priyanka Chopra, Rani Mukerji or Kajol, pick a
deep, rich color like burgundy or even warm brick tones look great on them.

Medium:

Deepika Padukone

If you have a medium skin tone like Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta and Madhuri Dixit,
go for anything from shades of pink reds (cool reds). It will work well with your golden undertones.

Fair:

Kareena Kapoor Khan

If you are fair like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor or Nargis Fakhri,
A coral red or a peachy red look best on you because they add a shot of colour and don’t look overwhelming.

TIP: Don’t be afraid to blend colors: If a color may not look too great with your complexion, blend it with a lighter or darker shade of red until it fits you perfectly.

How to prevent Lipstick on your teeth:

If your lipstick is thick enough to be visible on your teeth, then you are putting on too much. After applying lipstick fold a napkin or tissue and press it between your lips to blot any excess lipstick. It also prevents too much lipstick being on the corners of your mouth.
