#LookBack At Some Rani’s Most Versatile Looks In Her Films

As you know, it was announced today that Rani Mukerji married Aditya Chopra. While we don’t know yet what she wore for the wedding, we couldn’t help but look through some of her past films. Rani is known for the life she brings to the characters she plays and while doing so, her costumes have an identity of their own. Here are some of Rani’s most versatile looks from her past films.

The Patiala clad Con-star in Bunty Aur Babli

Babli is one of Rani’s most memorable roles to date, from a costume perspective too. Aki Narula had styled the looks in Bunty Aur Babli and Rani’s Patiala-heavy looks turned into a rage across the nation. From designers to pret brands to the streets, the Patiala-style shalwar and trousers became a must-have for every woman.

Apart from that, as a con artist, Rani experimented with a range of diverse looks in the same film!

grim simplicity of Black

Only a handful of few actresses in Bollywood earn a chance to carry a role that demands an extremely serious state of mind, with costumes that are set away from the mainstream love of glitter, current trends and embellishments. Rani’s role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black was a notch above that. With the genius mind of costumer designer for the film, Sabyasachi & the artistry of Bhansali, Rani showed an uncanny control on her character portrayal of Michelle McNally who was blind and deaf.

Her look in the film was one of Indian cinema’s notable triumphs in costume design. With a colour palatte of deep, dark tones, her look was styled with layers of knit that were tailored to perfection with attention to details in buttons, weave patterns.

The FEISTY journalist in No One Killed Jessica

No One Killed Jessica, being a film based on true life events, the costumes were set as close to reality as possible. And once again, Rani Mukerji slipped into the skin of the character in office shirts and pencil skirts to perform the role of a crass-mouthed, cut-throat journalist uncovering the grim story behind a cold-blooded murder.

Dress shirts, scarves, no make-up, and a subtle hint of layering here and there, there was nothing ground breaking-ly fashionable in the styling and that’s what got Rani’s look into the list. We know that the simpler things are the most tedious to execute and must be appreciated!

The sexy college sweetheart in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Who doesn’t remember Rani in that short sequinned dress in the song, Koi Mil Gaya in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? One of the biggest films in Indian cinema, Rani played ‘the hottest girl on campus’. She was convincing as a sexy and yet cute girl and later, as her character evolved into a woman, she was seen in saris and a few more traditional looks.

This was one of Manish Malhotra‘s most talked about film, styling worked and Rani’s short hemlines and bare midriffs got all the attention, back in the day.

The split personality in Dil Bole HAdippa

Once again, Rani played a Punjabi girl in Dil Bole Hadippa. But this was a bit different than her look in Bunty Aur Babli. Manish Malhotra designed her look and added a cropped desi embroidered jacket, called a ‘Koti’.

But here’s the catch! In the film, she is a cricket obsessed girl who is denied of opportunity to join the local team. And obviously, that won’t stop her, so she disguises herself as a Sikh boy with the beard, turban, kurta and shalwars- the whole mile!

The Biker gal in Ghulam

This was one of her first big hits and Rani really worked it off with a series of ‘the hot girl’ look. In Ghulam, she plays a city girl who has a thing for raw men like bikers and boxers.

In Aati Kya Khandala and through the film, Rani’s look was styled with short dresss and snug jeans and a hint of leather in some scenes.

The affluent fashion-aspirant in Chalte Chalte

In Chalte Chalte, Rani plays an aspiring fashion designer from an affluent background, who falls in love with a boy (Shah Rukh Khan) with a humble middle class status.

Style-wise, the fashion-aspirant feel came through strongly in her look. Chiffon tops with a glam twist and flowing embroidered skirts were the statement pieces in her styling.

The rajasthani girl in Paheli

Rani played a character named, Lachhi in Paheli. The film was set in Rajasthan and its rich culture was beautifully brought out in her costumes.

From the use of bandhani to Rajasthani traditional jewelry, Rani’s styling in the film was detailed and yet balanced.

The good girl gone bad in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

This was one of Rani’s most daring roles. Though themes of courtesans and prostitution have seen their spotlight in Indian cinema, the story in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag was a bit gutsy. Rani played a simple girl who was taken advantage of and conned in performing sexual favours in prospect of a job. She later took matters into her own hand and became a high-society call-girl, who chose her clients on her own accord.

And bringing the story to life was her styling in the film. There was a clear distinction in her look, from a simple village girl to a high society escort.

Aiyya

Aiyya came out at a time when India once again started digging into the fun elements in the South Indian masala films. And Rani completely nailed her performance.

In the song, Rani worked her charm through her moves and took the costumes to the next level.
