Our Favourite Romantic Bollywood Moments

Dhruvi Shah
Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met

You know that feeling? When you roll out of bed smiling, ready to take on the world? When everything around you is happy, shiny and bright. When you look through rose-tinted glasses and can’t wait to hold hands with your loved one. If you’ve ever been in love, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And if you’ve ever been to the movies on a date, you’ll remember these moments from your favourite Bollywood love stories.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

If any boy, and in this case, Shah Rukh Khan dances with you in a gazebo, while it’s raining outside, you are going to turn to mush. No? Well, there’s no music but you both know your heart is beating really loudly. I love this scene from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai!

Hum Tum

So, I have to tell you, I’m of ‘marriageable age’ and have actually, physically, gone on these arranged marriage dates. Yup, the cat’s out of the bag. But if I had practised with my former flame and discovered we’re in love, life would be seriously better. Don’t you just love the way this scene from Hum Tum has been arranged?

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge

This scene is actually Rashmi Daryanani‘s pick. But I think it’s very cute that Shah Rukh Khan (again) believes that if Kajol turns, she likes him. It’s one of those cute superstitions we have when in love. Of course, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is probably the most iconic love story of our times that has gone on to influence so many more directors.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Every time that I have watched Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, I have been immersed. These 2 scenes from the film are different from the usual Bollywood romance and I love what Katrina’s character has to say. And I love how both the characters meet half-way and let go of some of their notions because love is about accommodating the views of your loved one. The scene also highlights how language is not really a barrier when you’re in love.

Love Aaj Kal

I have watched Love Aaj Kal way too many times for my own good. I know it’s not everyone’s favourite Imtiaz Ali film. But I really like it. Through the film, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone‘s characters break up for practical reasons. But when they get together in the end, with Saif using the same lines as used to break up in the first place, I’m sobbing and the onlookers in the scene are clapping. Despite everything, being with someone you love eventually takes over reason and practicality, etc.

Dil To Pagal Hai

I actually remember watching Dil To Pagal Hai in a single screen old-school theatre the night it released. I remember crying in the movie because I felt so bad for Karishma Kapoor. But when even her character realises that Shah Rukh and Madhuri Dixit are meant to be together, who am I to disagree? Their romance is epic and their chemistry superlative. From the moment he calls her ‘aur paas’ to when Akshay Kumar plays Madhuri’s audio cassette in the end, you know they are ‘meant for each other’.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone dated in real life. When the promo for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani launched, all anyone could talk about was the line, “Tum samajhte kyun nahi… Mujhe tumse pyaar ho jaayega… Phir se“. My favourite moment from the movie is the final scene when Ranbir walks into Deepika’s house and proposes to her because he’d rather be with her than anywhere else, much to her overwhelmed surprise.

So, these are some of my favourite romantic moments from contemporary Bollywood movies. And as cheesy as it is, the number 7 kind of coincides with the ‘saat janmon’ type ‘pyaar’. Tell us about your favourite moments from the films and if any of the above make it to your list. Signing off with love.
