There is just no slowing down for Masaba. The designer and creative director of Satya Paul has been signed on by WICL as their official sporting apparel design partner. She will be designing the playing and training gear for WICL. We just had to ask Masaba for details on the project and here’s what she had to say.

Masaba with Alia Bhatt

Team MissMalini (Team MM): Firstly, how cool is this! Please tell us your first thoughts on the project?

Masaba (M):  I am a huge cricket fan! and I always catch an IPL game or two. CSK (Chennai Super Kings) is my favourite team.

Team MM: How did you conceptualize the looks?

M: Well, the design needs to be practical first and the colours & patterns need to be good enough to not distract but be playful too.

Masaba for Satya-Paul

Team MM: Currently, sports luxe is a big theme, did you bring in similar elements into the design story?

M: Yes, but I think the trend can only be incorporated to training gear, (it) may not be practical enough. We will definitely do fun arm-bands, caps and kits.

Team MM: Functionality is key for sportswear, so how did you balance it with style details?

M: We will be designing around the fabrics and cuts that are already a part of cricket, and add our creative bit to it. So, we will be working backwards. But needless to say, it will have a riot of colours and accents, perhaps in metallics, which is a huge trend.

Masaba Spring Summer 2014

Team MM: Could you tell us a bit about your fabrics choices for the project?

M: The fabrics will be coming from Australia itself and it will be polyester or polymides, which are what regular jerseys are made of. That is something we can’t play around with. It is a climate controlled fabric, which is sweat-absorbent and is compulsory.

Team MM: You’re designing the play and training gear for all the teams, so how many styles did you come up with?

M: Actually, we are still in the process of beginning design, once we have guidelines from all franchises, depending on colour logo and any superstitions the owners might have 🙂

Masaba

Masaba promises to share images and sketches of the looks as soon as she can! We obviously can’t wait to see the looks! What do you think of Masaba designing for the WICL? Tell us in the comments below!
