When the door closed behind me as I walked into Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s new store in Kalaghoda, I was suddenly transported. All of a sudden I wasn’t in Bombay, I was in an old, grand palace feeling out of place in my skinny jeans and tank. This was a store, but it called for a beautiful lehenga and some vintage jewellery, like the princess who could live here.
The flagship store is spread over two floors and is Sabyasachi’s vision of Indian luxury. His idea was to build an experience more than just a store. And by experience, he means, come to the store and as you browse, hang around with a cup of coffee, pick up one of the books lying around – he even has a tropical cactus garden to set the scene.
It is the home of wedding collectables, those signature Sabya saris and even has a section for menswear – your entire bridal shopping experience, all under one roof. Imagine mystery, nostalgia, street elements and a whole lot of intrigue mixed together in one store.
Detached from reality, you’ll find calm in the chaos that is Sabyasachi’s new store. A welcome chaos where amongst an array of hand wound clocks, time stands absolutely still.
The Sabyasachi new flagship store in Mumbai is located at, Ador House, Kalaghoda, Fort.
