7 Classic “I’m Rich, You’re Poor” Bollywood Love Stories

Malini Rajan

So the Bible says that love is patient, love is kind, it is not envious. Love does not brag, it is not puffed up. In Bollywood we have seen our share of unconditional love depicted on screen. More often than ever, it is love between the rich and the poor!

Let’s check out some great movies that were based on a love story between the rich and the poor. Some lived happily ever-after, some were not so fortunate. Nevertheless, love lives forever. At least I would like to believe so.

1. Mughal-e-Azam

A 1961 classic that you must watch again. Watch it alone. Absorb yourself in the dialogue. The story of how a prince falls in love with court-dancer, Anarkali. Amazing.

2. Bobby

How can we forget Bobby? The crazy love between Raj Nath, son of a rich businessman and Bobby Braganza, daughter of a poor Goan Christian fisherman.

3. Maine Pyar Kiya

Sallu Bhai‘s first movie in a leading role and a super hit. An extremely sweet love story between Prem, who is from a rich family who loves Suman, from a humble background. Watch how Suman is insulted by Prem’s rich friends. Cliche, but spot on!

4. Raja Hindustani

A super cute cabbie, Raja Hindustani and an innocent and wealthy Arti Sehgal falls in the kind of love you and I will never imagine. Love against all odds.

5. Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham

Love between Rahul and Anjali. Rahul has his own helicopter while Anjali sells mithai at Chandi Chowk. Go figure!

6. Kaho Na Pyar Hai

A super good looking hunk, Rohit who can also sing like a rockstar falls for a the rich Sonia Saxena but guess who’s not happy. The ever villainous father! Haiz!

7. Devdas

Devaaaaaaaaa…ishhhh! What a love story! Childhood love between Deva and Paro is rejected as their families are not from the same class cluster. Sad! This story has been made into more than 10 different films. That’s a blog on it’s own.

All I have to say after writing this blog post is love ho to aisi – unconditional! Give love a chance people!
